My confusion is if the judges want to see evidence of the underbody blackout then wouldn't it be obvious that the assembly line worker, while blacking out the exhaust would also have black overspray on the floor around the exhaust? You know they didn't tape up the floor before shooting the paint. Every Top Flight car that I see has the exhaust painted black but no overspray on the floor around it. Please explain how this process of restoration gets full credit although we should all know that the factory didn't take the time to cover up the underbody floor. Wouldn't/shouldn't this be just as much of grounds for deduction as no painted exhaust? Both methods are obviously signs of over-restoration, right?

    John,
I have the back that you and Dale Pearman wrote, it is wonderful, interesting, and extremely informative.

Re: Exhaust blackout, help me understand!

I'm a believer as you explained this in a previous post some time ago. Also factory photos and the photos from the UK where they disassembled a 60 and documented it in photos all confirm. So John, would you agree that the exhaust clamps, tie rod ends, steering arm, and stenciled driveshaft part number would all have been painted...roughly speaking of course? Is there anything on the chassis that would not have received blackout paint?

C1's - go to Rob's C1 Registry website & download a copy of the MIRA report. Photos of a brand new totally disassembled 61 or 62 (?) You can clearly see all the exhaust system was painted black on all sides. Very interesting document to read.Gary....

Is the "Rob" Robert Gallager? How/where do I find the C1 registry mentioned?

              Troy -

During the C1 era, the chassis blackout spray covered just about everything from the transmission rearward; coverage at the front was not as complete, as Engineering didn't want any black paint on the engine. It was not always consistent from car to car, but according to George Barlos and Phil Hawkins (St. Louis process engineers), it was pretty thorough.

Well that explains how it could be that some of the front end components were not painted in some C1s.

Do you think that fuel and brake lines and rebound straps would be included in "just about"?

The Rob referred to is Rob Musquetier (41157). If you chose to contact him thank him for this board. He and John Waggoner and Gary Chesnut are the NCRS IT team.

I tried Bling and didn't find the C1 registry. My favorite web search engine is google, but I can't get there from home -- only from work.

Yes on the fuel & brake lines, and more likely overspray than direct coverage on the rebound straps.

This process of blacked out mufflers was even carried over to the C4s. Some C4s have the mufflers blacked out from the factory. Others dont. I believe all 84s did not but some where down the road newer C4s had them blacked. I think all C3s were left natural?

Not so Walter. I looked at a C4 ZR1 (I can't remember the year) an it had muffler black-out. 1968-1972s C3s all had muffler black-out, but I can not speak to other C3s.
