The sure way to determine if you have the original spark plugs in that 1970 is to look at the very top of end of the plug, where the spark plug wire connects. If there is colored paint on the round top circle it is the factory installed plug. Plugs were delivered to the engine assembly plant in a holder that resembled an egg carton with 144 plugs to a holder. The heat range of the plug was identified by the color that was painted on that circle. That color was very prominent when the plugs were held in the shipping flat in their upright position ready for installation into the engine.
Terry, in my days at the chevy. dealership I remember that telling if the plugs were original by looking at the painted tips, but never knew the color was the heat range. nice info. I believe that they still are painting the tips these days. if not it could have been to long since they stopped.

In engine plants where multiple engines are made -- where several different heat ranges of plugs are needed -- I would bet they still receive them painted so that the assemblers know what the heat range is at a glance -- even if they are loaded into machines for the actual instalation. For those engine plants that make just one engine (I doubt there are any; even Wixom makes several) I suppose it might not be an issue. On the other hand the plant(s) that make and package the spark plugs for shipment to the engine assembly plants probably have a specification for that paint -- since they likely don't know where their product will end up -- and they probably paint all of them.

'Any idea which colors for the heat ranges?

I use to think that the reason for the painted tips on the plugs is that the GM warrenty rep.s use to have a way to check if the old warrenty part sitting on the shelf where the originals. once in a while GM would audit the dealership warrenty claims against the dealership,There was alot of fraud in the flat rate shop I worked in. I remember one year the service manger has a cabin cruiser with duel chevy. 350 engines and one of them went bad. so you know where I am going. those GM Target( or goodwrench) engines were great.

I knew that was coming, and it took longer than I expected. Sorry to say -- NO. Now if someone has a print of the spark plug(s).....

I got side tracked Terry. Nancy made dinner and I was hungry. Snowy and cold in Chi Town? We actually had a couple inches of snow covering the ice in East Texas. I thought I was living in NE Indiana again!

                All good excuses Steve.
Weather is not too bad on the south side of town, but the northern 'burbs, especially those close to the lake, got a dose of lake effect snow. It is winter and the Hawk is out.
