Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
Mike, I have a 1985 issue AC Sparkplug catalog and it makes on mention of "ACNITER" , which I believe was only a marketing gimmick. I Don't know if it was for OEM or aftermarket or both...Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
Mike,
Jeff Salz taught me to check ebay for ads. In searching the ebay AC spark plug ads I found this 1969 ad which could answer your question.
ACniter was trademarked in 1958 http://www.trademarkia.com/acniter-72049757.html

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
The sure way to determine if you have the original spark plugs in that 1970 is to look at the very top of end of the plug, where the spark plug wire connects. If there is colored paint on the round top circle it is the factory installed plug. Plugs were delivered to the engine assembly plant in a holder that resembled an egg carton with 144 plugs to a holder. The heat range of the plug was identified by the color that was painted on that circle. That color was very prominent when the plugs were held in the shipping flat in their upright position ready for installation into the engine.Terry- Top

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
Thanks! 68-69 JG (Ed. 3) says 68-69 used them. 70-77 manuals say they used them. 67 manual is silent on small block plugs, period. I'm trying to narrow down the applicability of a set of R44's I have here that are stamped, and are the larger plug (pre-71).Mike,

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
Mike,
Plug boxes are dated coded on the flaps, if you have the original boxes.

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
I have never seen a pattern for the use of ACNITER in green on the plug shank. Many boxes mention ACNITER but the spark plugs inside do not display that in green. I have seen it on plugs as early as 1966 or 1967 (mainly big block "N" plugs) and as late as 1973 which is a "peanut plug" I have a set of R43's w/ a 70 date on the box and ACNITER on them. The Z28 Camaro guys made me pay to much for them.- Top

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
Wayne,
Are you asking when AC Fire Ring came on the scene?
- Corolox was smooth shaft plug
- Fire Ring introduced 1957 with unpainted rings. Rumor has it the new Chevy V/8's were blowing the plug wires off the smooth ceramic Corolox type plugs
- Fire Ring in 1959, maybe 1958 came with green painted rings.
The big plug box is also dated on the flaps.

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
I have a 1969 350/350 with no AC. I have two sets of ACNITER R44 plugs which I beleive is the correct plug for the L46 engine. My question is which set would be correct for the engine as original. I realize that the plugs are not judged but since I have them, I might as well put it together correctly. One set has 4 equal green bands around the top of the plug and the other has a larger band with 3 smaller rings. Both sets of plugs have ACNITER R44 in green on the ceramic portion of the plug.
Thanks for any information.

If you look in your Owners Manual it should tell you the correct OE spark plug. Most likely it will be the plug for "Normal" driving.- Top

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
Steve,
The plugs that were installed in your engine at the Flint factory were R44's with 4 thin green bands. The ones you have that have the 1 thick and 3 thin bands are from roughly 1974/1975 and later. If the plugs are still in the boxes, check the dates on the flap of the individual boxes. I think you will se a "75" or later in the center of the circle on the ones with the thick band. 1969 was the first year for factory installed plug with the "R" prefix (resistor).

Re: AC plugs with "Acniter" stamping
Here's the timeline as I know it based on the collection of orignal ads. Prior to 1956 the plugs had a smooth porcelain (no ribs) and sometimes (probably earlier) said "Corolox" on the porcelain. The boxes pretty much all had the Corolox trademark on them but often the plugs did not. In 1956 the trademark "Hot Tip" came into being. These plugs had the ribs but no green on them. Some had "Hot Tip with Fire Rings" on the boxes but the ads all refer to "Hot Tip" plugs. In 1960 the trademark "Fire Ring" was used and the plugs all had 4 thin gren rings. This stayed the same until 1969 model tear when the "Acniter" trademark started. These also had 4 thin green bands. As I said above the 3 thin, 1 thick band came in around 1975. As a side note, there was a month in 1957- around March- when the old smooth shank 46-5 Corolox plugs were put into the engines due to customer complaints of plug fouling. Then it was discovered that the boots of the ignition wires fell off of the plugs so AC46 plugs, also with no green, were used until the end of production (Noland Adams). This is all based on the photos used in the AC Delco ads during the period not on observations of original cars since even a low mileage car would have changed the plugs around 6000 miles so no large data base could be accurate.
