Quick Question: Proper way to crank engine w/o starting?

I know this has been discussed before; but maybe this is a little different.
Question: What is proper way to crank a engine w/o starting it. Is it different
    from a T/I like a L72 vs. conventional like L68(with points)?
Do you simply unhook the spark plug wire from the distributor to the coil and
just let it hang in the air w/o touching anything or should it be it be grounded?
Also I assume you unhook it from the coil side vs. distributor side or does it
make a difference? Thanks in advance. Larry

if you have a TI i would unplug the black box (amplifier) to make sure you don't do any damage to the electronics

        Clem:

OK; then what?? Do you still unplug the spark plug wire from the coil? Ground it? How about
the non T/I car?? Thanks Again - Larry

If you disconnect the TI, there is no spark to ground. Nothing else to do.

OK; that settles the T/I cars and thanks. Now how about the non T/I with the points. Surely
someone should know. Please Advise; Larry

the best way is to disconnect the positive side of the coil so you don't have any spark jumping because if any gasoline is present you could have a fire.
