      Brian,

Are you sure that you are using the correct battery clamp (aka retainer)? See link below.

      68-70, GM # 3887588
      71-72, GM # 1383273
      73-81, maybe 82 Corvette as well, GM # 6270159
82 Camaro, GM # 14005061 as per AIM

      3887588, 1383273, and 6270159 are very similar.

GM # 14005061 (thick black plastic, about 1" thick as best as I can remember), see 2nd link below. My 1994 Z28 uses this battery retainer with bolt # 11515984 (M8 X 1.25 X 75, about 2.95" effective length.

The 78 AIM shows GM# 6270159 for the bracket with a GM# 3858700 bolt. The bolt is as Paragon describes

Battery hold down bolt, “E” headmark, 5/16-18x1 1/4", w/pinch point and captured washer."
but seems I recall that bolt to be about 1 3/4" in length. I'll check it later for you if you haven't received confirmation.

The same battery hold-down clamp bolt assembly was used from 1968 through 1982, GM #3858700. This bolt had a captured flatwasher, pilot (pointed) tip, and a length, measured from underhead to the tip of 1.42"

As far as I can tell, it was never available in SERVICE.

              Joe,

My Chev. Dealer Parts and Accessories Price Schedules (Sept. 1976 and Jan. 1978) list GM # 3858700 in Gr. 16.323 (door parts) for $0.10 (list price) stocked at "GMT" (General Motors Truck Division Warehouses). GM # 3858700 was discontinued sometime between Jan. 1976 and Dec. 1981 as per my GM Parts History Catalog.

                    Hi Tom,

That's the same "ELH" bolt head on my low mile Pace Car. What do the letters mean? The threads on the bolt measures about 1 3/8" compared to the one Zip Corvettes sent me which is less than 1" long. Their bolt only has an "E" stamp on it.

Still, as I do research on the many Corvette online catalogs, their bolts seem shorter than what's needed on my other car. It's nice to have a Vette in the garage that I can cross reference as I'm trying to get this other Pace Car ready to sell.

Where do I go to find the correct length bolt?

I picked this one up from Carlisle...swap meet by browsing through tables of misc hardware. It measures 1 3/8" in length.
