is antique auto battery (tar top) acid fill or maitnenace free? also is it properly date coded? i recently recived a true tar top from Axion Power in PA. i was desperate to get the car ready for tripple dimond in chicago so i rushed to get a replacement. the battery looked great and operated.... unitl we unloaded and thevoltage regualtor failed 9started putting out 30 v) acid boiled everwhere. but that was NOT the battery fault

the battery was a true tar top and looked perfect but the date code was on the side near the batery post and could not be seen by the judge. when i asked Axion about this i was told "Some NCRS judging calls for a date code toward the middle of the battery on one of the intermediaries. This has to be burned in, not stamped because of the material being too thin. We don't have the tools for this. In the past we have stamped a code if the customer knows the code on the hard edge of the battery in line with the positive post (toward the front or script side). Some judges don't accept this and some do. From what I can tell the reason it varies may have been where the different battery plants placed their date codes. On that hard edge it can be done with a simple leather punch."

The tar top battery I purchased for my 1960 From Antique Auto Battery contains a small AGM type battery. I have not tested it in severe cold, but in North Texas, we don't have severe cold that would test the cold cranking power except a couple of days per year. Our last temperature at or below 32 degrees was January 20, 2012.

The date code passed Regional flight judging.

Mine is a true tar top but if something goes wrong it's all on your nickel. I never asked where on the battery the date code will go. Antique auto sent me a fax with the pictures of a centerline and offset. If you would like a copy I can e mail it to whomever wants one.

The tar tops from Antique contain an Odyssey battery. They are the best on the market and have a service live of 10-12 years. Not to be confused with the POS Optima battery. Do a search on them. They're made in America and the U.S. Navy uses them exclusively on their subs.

I looked up my January 2012 receipt and I purchased the tar top with AGM battery inside the case from Restoration Battery, NOT Antique Auto Battery.

Regardless, Antique was the one who made it, Restoration re-sold it to you.
