Tar top battery for my 62

I would like to know if the Delco OEM "tar top" battery DC-12 ; CAT. NO. 558 is still available. If not is there something that won't get me killed on points.
    Thanks, Joe

Re: Tar top battery for my 62

During the summer I put a Restoration Tar Top in my 62 and it looks great, works great and there was no points off on the September judging. I also got it date coded.
It looks like you went to the first judging for your car and now its chasing "correct" parts. I'm still buying parts for mine based on judging.
Care to share you serial number, engine stamping and FI serial number (if it is a fuelie).
    Pat

Hi Pat, you are 100% correct, they handed me a whippen; I'm licking my wounds and keep going. May I ask where you got the battery and did they also do the date coding for you. My serial # is 20867S104777 and I don't know the engine stamping but I will look, no FI. What's your's? Let me know what your looking for and If I run across some of it I'll let you know. Thanks Joe

This is the company I used for my C2s, and they date code as well (look on right side of page)

Thank you. The battery on their website looks like the real deal. I will order tomorrow. Thanks again! Joe

Michael, I see in the judging manuel that the cell top covers are offset for a 62. I don't know what that means. Everything else looks exactly like the original.

Restoration Battery is a re-seller of batteries made by Antique Auto Battery - http://antiqueautobattery.com/ But directly from the manufacturer for a better price and they date code it for free.

I don't know either, maybe a '62 expert can chime in....

That's what I had thought too, but someone told me (I think at a regional last year?) the "Poly-Tar" (registered trademark for them) is not the same as the Restoration Battery real tar top. Anyone know the difference?

Antique Battery makes BOTH types. They actually add the tar to the poly top but it's not as simple as smearing the tar on it as it won't stick directly to the poly top. AGAIN, Restoration is only a re-seller. They don't make batteries.

Thanks for the heads up. Does anyone know about what is meant by the cell top covers being off set? Joe

Joe, An old time NCRS member owns Restoration Battery. He's Tom Kobman and lives not far from the NCRS home office. You will do well to deal with Tom. John

Tom I wish I had known about 2 hours earlier. Based on the info that Antiqueauto is the builder of them I went ahead and ordered. I feel bad. I will keep the info and if asked in the future I tell them about Tom Kobman. Thank you for the info

Well then hopefully you got the proper tar top and it was lots less than the $302 that Restoration Battery wanted......

Price was about the same and I hope all else is the same. They were very nice as I'm sure Restoration Battery is. Joe
