    11:1 Pistons for 283

    Hi all,

Someone told me that the forged 11:1 Chevy pistons for the 283 engine are no longer available. If they are, can someone steer me to a source? I'd rather not have to go aftermarket because most of that stuff is very pricey.

    Thanks,

    Bob

          Re: 11:1 Pistons for 283

Are you talking about a '61? I believe those were the only 283s that used "11:1" forged pistons for the FI engines. Prior FI engines with the Duntov cam were rated at 10.5:1, and the pistons were cast. I believe Danchuck offers a repro, but I don't know who manufactures them.

Check Sealed Power/Speed Pro and also check other piston manufacturers like Venolia or (forgot the name) in Huntington Beach, CA.

All use a forged blank that I believe is sourced from Federal Mogul. They can machine most OE designs or machine a customized design for a reasonble fee.

In today's CNC machining world, as long as a suitable forged blank is available, nearly any piston design can be machined. Same thing with camshafts.

Egge makes 283 domed pistons - they started making them about five years ago.

No original 283 pistons were forged material. All were conventional cast using permanent mold. Most were cast at GM's Bedford, IN aluminum foundry.

The first forged pistons for a small block were 1962 340 and 360 HP.

As I responded to Duke, forged pistons for a 283 were never available from GM.

The 11:1 cast aluminum pistons for 283's, GM #3769731, lh, and GM #3769732, rh, were discontinued without supercession in 1982. So, these pistons have not been available in 30 years!

If you want a set of cast, dial 602-254-9586 and ask for Bill. I have a set in the LM car.

Okay. I'll try to remember that. Since the '61 FI engines had higher compression than prior years, I thought they might be forged.

The manufacturer in Huntington Beach, CA whose name slipped me at the time is JE Pistons.

Over the past 20 years we've had a few small lot runs - like 10 to 12 sets - of Cosworth Vega pistons machined by JE from proper forged blanks in several different dome volumes to achieve CRs from the OE 8.5:1 up to about 10.5:1

                          Bob,
In my drag racing days I used JE 12.5 pistons. I had JE flycut the valve pockets and cut a flash pocket for the spark to reach across for an Isky 550 flat tappet cam. That engine is still alive in a very fast boat in the unblown, small C/I class. This in a 334 C//I, 548 block, with two bolt mains. JE may still make lower compression pistons. With todays gas and ignitions I would be a little leary about 11 to 1, that is unless you have a source for 100+ octane fuel. Be careful of the skirt to wall clearence, street driving vs. racing. You did not say what the engines purpose will be used for. JE will build your pistons with full floating wrist pins, oil hole drilled and all. You would have to have the rods drilled at the top for oil to pass through to the bronze bearing that are pressed into to them. With this type of set up, and a blue printed lower end it should last forever, depending on the RPM attained.

JE has been a manufacturer of premium custom made pistons for many years. Of course, they also have a line of premium off-the-shelf pistons. I think they even have a line of "budget" pistons under another brand name (maybe "SCE" or something like that).

JE has been around for at least 50 years. I used Venolia, JE and Forgedtrue in the early '60's.
