    Engine mounts

This past winter I went through the front end of my car. I doing so I replaced the engine mounts with repro's as a precaution. I have one of those darn Tipped fans used with car that have A/C. On the way back from, or to, Carlisle the fan hit the frame. Fortunately not bad, the fan is OK, 4 tips just needed an "adjustment".

I planned on adding an additional shim, the "V" type, to raise the engine. After I added the shim I noticed the rubber on the mounts was squeezed out to the point that it took effort to put the socket on the lower bolt. Is it normal for the rubber to squeeze out like that on original or repro's?? Thanks!!

    Re: Engine mounts

I recall seeing a thread by maybe Joe Lucia regarding the lack of quality on the engine mounts.

I would not be surprised at all is the repro does not have the right rubber and that is compresses too much of wears mare quickly than the originals.

One of my originals gave way which is why I ended up replacing.

      Lynn,

It was my understanding that the fans are balanced, and once bent or damaged, cannot be properly "fixed" simply by bending it back to what appears to be correct. I read this recently, either here on the TDB or a back issue of Restorer, I think. Someone here will know more about this.

NOS GM engine mounts (the 1970+ locking type) are available fairly often on the auction website.

Scott, you may be right about the balance, just not sure this was cause of the failure. While I did make the repair (very minor as I indicated) and the only damage (after less than 1500 miles after the first repair) was the very ends of the tips. They did scrape the frame when I rotated it cold though. It seems balance is not an issue. If it were I'd see a bearing issue with the water pump, the first thing I checked after taking it apart.

As always, input is always welcome. Thanks!!
