Enclosed are pictures of the rear end crossmember. Pictures show the part number, and the dana logo stamped into the crossmember. Also you can see a small dana logo on the corner piece of that is part of the weldment.

Interesting photos Tom. The cushion in your photo is of a style that may have been introduced sometime during or after '65. I'm still researching that. The earlier C2 style had four smaller attachment flanges (two @ 3:00 o'clock and two @ 9:00 o'clock).

Thanks for the replys about the relay rod. The finish as a result of the forging process makes a lot of sense. I really couldn't image it being a coating/plating, then recoated black as an assembly.

Does anyone know why the spindles have the orange paint on them? I'm familiar with this, but never knew why.

My understanding was it was to signify they were Magnifluxed and ready for install. I am not 100% on that factoid, but that is what I have heard.

Maybe John Hinckley knows.

On C1's (drum brakes) for sure starting in 1956 and maybe before - chassis part identification paint marks were:
1) Steering Knuckle lower had Yellow paint
2) Steering Knuckle upper had Orange paint

Always wondered if the orange paint meant for the C1 assembler "this side up".

I don't know for sure, but it's obviously some sort of in-process inspection/verification marking; the entire front spindle assembly (spindle, steering arm, hub, bearings, rotor, caliper bracket and caliper) was machined and assembled at Chevrolet-Warren and shipped to St. Louis, and the orange marking could have related to any critical part of that complete assembly.

Tony -- Per GM doc's the switchover to 2nd design cushion occured AFTER the 1st car produced in May '65. See Vette Vues reprint of Tech Bulletin.
