For quite awhile, Mobil 1 was the only synthetic oil that met GM standard 4718M. So, I believe that's why GM at least initially recommended Mobil 1. There are others now that meet that standard.

I don't think that GM recommends a specific brand of Dex-Cool (except, likely, their own Goodwrench brand). Coolant labeled as Dex-Cool is available from all the coolant brands.
Appreciate it Joe. I didn't realize that synthetic Mobil 1 was the only one to initially meet some of GM's C4 oil standards, nor that it is not the only one to do so now. And to be honest, I also did not know that Dex-Cool was kind of a generic term available in differnt coolant brands. Thanks for the insight.

I've been "out of the loop" on emission fuels since I retired in 2001, but at that time, all emission testing and development was done using a laboratory-grade fuel specified by the EPA called "Indolene"; all the gas pump clusters at both the GM and Chrysler Proving Grounds had an "Indolene" pump along with the normal retail grades, and vehicles involved in emission-related testing had to use "Indolene".

        To quote:

Indolene is a form of gasoline used in testing because it is standardized and has no additives.

Indolene gasoline is used for the US Federal Test Procedure (FTP) to certify vehicles for emissions rather than commercial gasoline. Indolene fuel used in certification typically has a sulfur content below 50 parts per million (ppm). On the other hand, commercial gasoline sulfur content ranges between 30 and 1000 ppm throughout the US with an average of about 300+/-50 ppm.

Indolene gasoline results in reproducible tailpipe emissions from a test vehicle. Commercial gasoline results in a wide range of emissions. The emissions differences are attributable largely to the disparity in gasoline sulfur content.

I believe some of these sources are dated. The recent "Motor Gasolines Technical Review" pdf I referenced in a nearby thread states that current California Phase 3 RFG, which went into effect in 2004 is limited to 20 ppm sulfur. Also, as of 2004, 49-state gasoline is limited to 30 ppm annual average with no more than 80 ppm in any one batch (page 29).

Interestingly, the ultra low sulfur road diesel requirement that went into effect a few years ago is 15 ppm. Prior to that it averaged about 500.

Lower sulfer fuels is why current category API engine oils have a lower TBN than many prior categories.

          Go to for the pdf:

            CORRECTION: last paragraph and link.

Go to the the following thread for the pdf link to the above referenced document from Chevron. It is the best write-up on gasoline on the Web. One of the co-authors is one of our own - Mike Ingham, who is our current Western Region representative. Mike recently retired from Chevron and also has a MSME from the U. of Wisconsin Engine Research Center. He did his work a couple of years after I completed mine.
