Fuel sender

Hi, I have a 65 roadster, had to replace a nonfunctioning sender. The gauge works fine when activating the sender boom manually-that is when I raise the float the gauge moves to full.

The problem appears to be that the float level needs to be altered to give a true reading. That is, when the
tank is half full, the reading is 1/4 or less.

So question is does the float need to be positioned lower or higher in the tank? Not easy to do it by hand-I have tried. But which way? Seems it should be lowered, but now not so sure. Thanks.

Step #1 is to verify the resistance range of the new sending unit; remove all three connectors from the harness to the sending unit, and connect an ohmmeter across both of the pin terminals on the sender - it should show zero ohms with the float arm all the way down (empty) and 90 ohms with the float arm all the way up (full).

If that checks out, refer to the sending unit photo below. To alter the gauge reading so it shows 1/2-full with the tank 1/2-full, the idea is to raise the point where the float rod exits the resistor housing (increasing resistance) without changing the position of the float itself by bending the rod.

If the sending unit you removed is an original AC unit, I'd recommend you send it to John Wolf & Co. - he'll send it back better than new (www.johnwolfco.com).

I've never seen a replacement, including the Chinese Delco or Fargo units that read correctly. Have John Wolf restore your original.

Here's a test of that unit, after I cleaned up the inside of the rheostat.

The box was for a replacement and was labelled "defective Vette". But the sender inside was an original.
All it needed was a little tender care.
