Hey guys, Finally able to spend some time in the garage.

So I took some video of the valve stem movement in the guide. I don't know if this is a lot or a little, I'm learning as I go (which has made this slow, but fun). This is cylinder #2 both intake and exhaust. Can you guys take a look and let me know what your opinion is?

The o-rings were still on both the valves. They were brittle and cracked when I removed them. I found that on the exhaust valve, the plastic umbrella had a chunk missing.

Here is the cracked metal umbrella removed

I picked up new springs, retainers, and locks. I don't know if this is a big deal or not, but unsprung these are different heights.

in the shop manual there is a spec using a dial indicator to check the side movement. i have never used it so i don't know the numbers. check the shop manual. what is the part # of your new springs ??? if you use the umbrella type seals make sure they are viton material to prevent them from deteriorating from the oil

Those springs are erroneously called "Z28 Springs" - they are not. Those springs are for the second design "off-road" Z/28 over-the-counter camshaft that was used in the Trans-Am cars, and have a significantly higher rate (the production Z/28 used the same springs as every other standard Chevy small-block - 85# closed, 190# open). The correct springs are available as GM #3911068 or Federal-Mogul #VS-677.

I sent my 1962 327 engine to the rebuilder with a bare set of heads. They sent back a long block assembled balanced and painted. 1962 340 hp everything was correct. Started on the first try and ran great. Based on d. willams data readusted the valves. 3.000 miles later still runs great. Cam was from NAPA rebuild kit was from?
