Replacement Valve Shield (metal umbrella piece)

I haven't been able to find these anywhere. I found that one of mine is cracked (the pic below has the crack). I am getting a lot of advice to replace the springs, retainers, and locks on the entire motor.

But if I wanted to replace just the shields/umbrellas and o-rings, the "just fix whats broken" concept, I can't find these parts anywhere.

If anyone knows how to find these, this is the place!

    Do a Google search - 3836755 shield.

GM might still have them. Also, engine shops might have some used examples. They are often not reused depending on the type of valve seal technology used. Probably someone here has a box of used examples, too.

I see no reason to replace everything if the engine is otherwise in good condition, but since the valve seal o-rings usually come in a package of 16, you might consider replacing all the valve seals if oil consumption is on the high side.

The last part number I show is GM #10007818 but it's discontinued. There may be a new part number but I don't have it. Any GM dealer should be able to cross reference it from this number or, if there is no supercessive part number, find you a 10007818 in dealer stock. There just have to be a lot of these out there.

If you use stock-type o-ring valve seals you MUST use these shields. If you use positive type seals ("Perfect Circle" teflon, etc.) you don't need the shield (but I still use them anyway).

If your engine has not had the o-ring seals replaced in a long while, I guarantee you that all seals are shot. They'll crumble when touched.

if you find any new ones make sure you anneal them with a torch because they are brittle from forming in the die

Thanks for your help fellas! I had the 3836755 shield number also from my parts catalog and wasn't finding anything. I was able to find the GM #10007818 on ebay and I bought it. My parts catalog doesn't list/show an o-ring. Do you happen to know this number?

remember the "O" ring goes on AFTER you compress the valve spring and retainer and then let the retainer comes up over the "O" ring. a little oil on the "O"ring helps the retainer slip up over the "O" ring. also the original GM ones were "square" cut not round ones

So are these under the 2 piece locks/keys that hold the retainer in?

the "O" ring go in the lower of the 2 grooves in the valve stem and the keys go in the upper grove

here is a picture of the 2 grooves and the "O" ring goes in the lower groove and the keys go in the upper groove. the "O" ring seals the gap between the 2 keys so the oil does not run down the valve stem by seating against the bottom of the keys

also if the valves you have do not have the bottom groove you will need to use a "umbrella" type seal to prevent excess oil from running down the valve stem

Yup and the ones they sell now are "square", too. And, they must be installed so they are not twisted.
