    Lacquer Paint Source

Can anyone out there recommend a source for Lacquer Paint - I have a 65 Maroon Coupe that was painted in Lacquer 5 years ago, the paint that was left over from that painting is not a good match now. My painter just had some delivered and it's a worse match
then my old stuff. Problem is The car is in great shape paintwise except for the hood - so we are trying to match it. Any information
is appreciated. NY/NJ/Pa area would be great, but would like the best no matter where it's located. Thanks.

Edward, to get lacquer paint and expect the color to match dead on is a tall order. Is it possible to find out what brand of lacquer was used when the car was painted last? I would start that way and your painter should suggest tinting the lacquer you do get by spraying test panels to get a good color match.

Hi Michael, don't expect a dead on match. Would like to get closer then what we have now before we start tinting. Thanks for such a fast reply.

I am very curious as to why the left over paint no longer matches. Has the car sat out side a lot in the past 5 years?

I would guess that air pressure, technique, temp, familiarity of using lacquer, and/or humidity make the difference in the match.

I just purchased my paint in Ohio today. B &W Paints in Toledo has an expert paint match specialist (Doug). They use PPG paints because Dupont has discontinued their laquer paint as well as RM. I used a gas cap for the match. It will take three days to complete. He only mixes a quart and sprays out several samples. He matches the color in sunlight , flourescent, etc. Once the color is right his mixes the remainder of the paint and resprays to assure consistency. I have seen his work and have been very impressed. It is very pricey at $600 per gallon. I also purchased red oxide primer (laquer) to make the car even more "originally" restored.

Use the "close match" paint and flash the areas around the hood (ie, fender tops, cowl and headlight panel.
It may not be a good match but it will fool the eye.

                        Re: Lacquer Paint Source

I believe that I would take my leftover paint (if there's enough to do the top surround) and the gas lid door (if representative of the color today) or a wiper grill (or ???) to a paint store with a computer reader and be prepared to mix and match more than once. If you were here in Arizona, I know where I would send you, but.......
