Resistance internal to the wiring started well before the "R" was added to the cap.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: Delco Distributor cap patent pending R
After thinking through the events of the era when all this ocurred, I believe the "R" was added to indicate Registered patent on the paqrt. GM/delco were always fighting the aftermarket sources who made knockoffs of the cap, despite it being illegal to do so, and the lack of a "R" was one of the issues the Gov't used to explain why they were not defending the patent. The second change to add the part number is likely due to two things, if as I recall it happened around 1975, that is when GM was moving to HEI, so the demand for the D-308 style cap was going to H--- in a handbasket, and also new technologies in Phenolic molding were becoming available. The new technology required new tooling and by this time it was a service item only so why not build the new tooling to include the actual part number of the item? I wasn't there, but where I worked we had a MAJOR phenolic molding operation to make Fuseblocks, right up to the changeover to the "Autofuse" One of the folks I worked with was the molding engineer in that area, and I recall some major technology (Process related) changes in that era, all requiring new tooling.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: Delco Distributor cap patent pending R
GM NEVER used an external resistor in the secondary ignition system. GM owned the patent (via Packard Electric Div) on resistance wires which were MUCH more effective than external resistors for radio noise suppression, the ONLY reason to have resistance in a secondary ignition circuit.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: Delco Distributor cap patent pending R
Emissions was only a pipe dream when these caps were used, at least in relative terms as to what came later. Remember GM went to HEI across the board in 1975 with only a few exception.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: Delco Distributor cap patent pending R
Sorry I don't since my retirement and the disbandment of the old ACG group via the Delphi spinoff and subsequent bankruptcy of Delphi. At this point, God only knows how much of that documentation may even exist. My old outfit Packard Electric, went from a "keep everything" approach to a "Throw everything out" approach in the 2000-2010 era under Delphi. All I know from my working in Joint group meetings in the old ACG (Allied Component Groups Delco Remy, Saginaw Steering, AC, Packard Electric, Delco Products Delco Radio, Later Delco Electronics) is that the late 60's there was a push to show patent and trademark protection and the "R" was commonly used to signify "Registered Trademark" within the GM Component Groups.Bill Clupper #618- Top
