    What Happened To The Wave

    Hello All,
My first Corvette was a brand new 1973 coupe purchased right after graduating from college.

One thing I remember was any time you met another Corvette you would wave to the other driver.

I see Harley guys still wave to other Harley guys.

What happened to the Corvette wave?

AFAIK nothing happened except now there are more closed cars and higher freeway speeds. I wave, but I can't see inside the other Corvette to know if they are waving back. In slower traffic I roll down my window and the wave is alive and well when the other driver has his window down too.

Pass me sometime. You will get a wave regardless of what I'm driving or riding. Nothing happened to the wave for this guy !

I always wave as well. That's the first thing I learned when we bought our '71 in August of '78. It didn't matter what year of Corvette it was - a Corvette was a Corvette and you always wave!

Hey I did not know about the wave. Here in Miami we beep the horn. I'll start the wave...

You can't see my wave, it is down low like the Harley riders. Don H.

I still get it when I drive this car once a week, multiple times:

Don't see too many Corvettes on the road, but I get a wave or thumbs up from many others

Re: What Happened To The Wave

Let's remember, folks....way back when the "Wave" first started, there were, what....300 Corvettes produced? Not all sold, either..as time went on, more and more were rolling off the assembly line. 1962 saw a whopping 14K+....Spread these numbers between 50 states, over hill and dale, and you'll find you have very few Corvettes in any one area...So, when two Corvettes passed each other..it WAS a big deal....(Still is to us!!!, right?) Thus...."The Wave"

Today? How many Corvettes are rolling off the assembly line...??? They're not as "Rare a Sight" as in days gone by....So, if you have a...Oh, say...a nice 1968 427/390 cruising Mulholland Highway, and a 2012 is coming the other way, with a hot little number behind the wheel of "Daddy's Graduation Gift" ...Only one thing comes to mind....."What on EARTH does she know of the history, romance or legend of this automobile? Would the names, Zora Duntov, Larry Shinoda, Harley Earl or Bill Mitchell mean a THING to her....???" I think not. So, where would a "Wave" come in?
These situations, we must learn to live with, although I do get "Waves"

In closing...some years back while sitting at a light in my '63 Split Window Coupe, a very late model Corvette pulled up beside me. A very sweet, old lady was behind the wheel...her window went down, I rolled mine down as well, and almost fainted as she said...."That's a great looking car....what is it?"

                I rest my case.....

The "wave" was alive and well when I lived in Central Illinois back in the late 60s and early 70s. Not so much here in deep South Texas. I still wave!

I agree with Bob's statment. A few years ago Dick and I arranged a weekend trip to the National Corvette Museum for our local club (Most own C4s or C5s). As the guide stopped in front of Zora's statue and the urn with his ashes and began talking, I heard a lady in our group mutter, "Who in the world is he?" I came home and wrote an article for our next newsletter about the debt all Corvette owners owe Mr. Duntov.

Sure, traffic congestion, divided highways, and the sheer number of Corvettes that are on the road today doesn't necessarily mean a wave every time but,

"...............a hot little number behind the wheel................."

Always generates a wave from me, I ain't that old yet!!

I always wave, but I am a C2 owner that happens to have a C6 too. I notice it is the C5 and C6 only type owners, younger guys, who fail to wave as you go by. Some look at me like I am crazy when I wave at them from my ZR1 C6. We discuss this issue at every Corvette club meeting (I am in two clubs since I am between cities), and always inform new members, no matter how young, that this is a great Corvette tradition. Education and encouragement is the answer to "Save The Wave".

Re: What Happened To The Wave

Here in Central Florida, most of the Vettes are newer and they have their A/C's on so, as it was said before, you don't know for sure if they waved. I still do it no matter. Actually, I get more waves from bikes and old muscle cars - often when I least expect it. Last week it was an older Dodge or Plymouth with a dual scoop hood in primer and 2-60 A/C - (2 windows down @ 60+ MPH).

Circa - mid 1970's - Mason-Dixon Corvette Club meeting - first item on the agenda -"Save the Wave"

There's a thread on this every other month on the other Corvette forums.

                            Yea, I still wave.

It seems that most people in older Corvettes drivers wave but not as many people in newer ones do. I wave at all Corvettes & still get a lot of thumbs up from non Corvette drivers.
