One of the magic parts of the Shelby story is the close and personal relationship Carroll had with Iacocca. That allowed much collaboration at the top level, unfettered with corporate bureaucrats telling them what they couldn't do. Both were auto geniuses and marketing experts, and the results showed. It all started falling apart when the corporate suits started telling Shelby what to build, and by late 1969, nobody wanted the GT350s and 500s anymore. The '70s sat unsold for years in some cases. If GM had a person like Iacocca, maybe more GM cars would have been like Shelby's legendary Cobras and Mustangs. But the GM suits just never had the vision of an Iacocca and Shelby.

I have a Ford loving friend that named his daughter Shelby Croba XXXXX after him; he hold the record for longest living man with a heart transplant; she, Shelby C. X., is now a teenager and beautiful...but still likes Mustangs. RIP Shelby...

that is a lot different than installing a ford V-8 into a british sports car in some garage in calif and selling them to the public. look what happened when shelby tried to take those old leftover original 427 cobra frames they had and sell them as 60s 427 cobras a few years ago. the govt stepped in and said you need to have all the govt required safety and emissions equipment on them to make them legal to run on the road. they could sell them as non street legal race cars.

He was a gentleman when I gave him a ticket (expired registration on a compact car) in the early 70s....showed me a miniature CHP badge close to his driver's license in a attempt to get out of it, but I had started writing, so had to complete it........ should have recognized him wearing his cowboy hat in Beverly Hills, CA......I was 23 & in awe afterwards.

Speaking of that area, one of my favorite Shelby stories is the party held by Hugh Hefner to celebrate the awarding of a pink 1969 Shelby GT500 to the Playmate of the Year, Connie Kreski, at the Beverly Hilton. Shelby had been very close to Hefner for years and supplied Shelbys to Hef's mansions as "pool" cars for the playmates and guests and helped get one of the first '64 1/2 Mustang convertibles painted pink for a playmate of the year. That night Carroll wore a pink suit in a color to match the Shelby he was giving to Connie. Bet he looked "marvelous" in that!
