Re: Lost a Legend Carrol Shelby dead
I met him a few years ago at the Oshkosh Fly In. He was driving a large golf cart with Ford logos all over it. He brought some aviation guys and gals over to see the Legend Cub and no one seemed to know who he was....except me. It is an airplane crowd, after all. He was very gracious and we talked for several minutes. A real genuine guy. Intellectually we know everybody dies, but it is still a sad day.

Re: Lost a Legend Carrol Shelby dead
My first classic car infatuation was with Mustangs, and to me, Shelby Mustangs were and are some of the coolest classics ever. He was probably the first person's name I ever associated with classic cars.- Top

Re: Lost a Legend Carrol Shelby dead
For a guy that had a heart transplant a very long time ago, he did remarkably well. Under those circumstances to live to be 89 is quite amazing. He will be missed. Icons of the "glory days" (at least in our minds) of the automobile industry are getting to be few-and-far-between. He was one of the last ones standing. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Lost a Legend Carrol Shelby dead
Mr. Shelby had a great vision for life and his influences on the Shelby Cobra and Mustang. I will never forget my 1967 GT-500. It was nice to have a big block with two holley carb's on a aluminm High-Rise intake manifold. Thus, I will never forget "The Legend". He could really make it happen!- Top

He was to Ford what Zora was to Chevy. I have met them both a few times & it struck me how much they were alike. Both were willing to talk to & share stories. Bet they are in heaven bench racing.65 350 TI CONV 67 J56 435 CONV,67,390/AIR CONV,70 454/air CONV,

Re: Lost a Legend Carrol Shelby dead
A terrible loss to the automotive world, he was a true legend and as creative and innovative an auto genius as any that ever lived. I am now wondering if I should take off the many items he signed for me over the years on my '68 Shelby GT500KR when I take it to the shows. I suspect those are about to become much more valuable and now irreplaceable.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: Lost a Legend Carrol Shelby dead
Back in my Cobra days in the early 90's, I was in a group that had dinner with Carroll at the SAAC National Convention; responding to a question about how he was feeling after one of his recent transplants, he said that he took 46 different medications each day to counteract the rejection mechanisms. He was the original "bionic man".- Top

Re: Lost a Legend Carrol Shelby dead
Sad to hear the news. I never met him, but know he was an amazing man. Although most known for his work with Ford, I understand he also worked with Gary Laughlin and Jim Hall on the 3 Scaglietti bodied 1959 Corvettes - beautiful. If that project had taken off . . . who knows the L88's could have been the KR's of Corvettes.

Re: Lost a Legend Carrol Shelby dead
If anyone ever gets the chance, read "Remembering the Shelby Years". It is a set of interviews with many of those that were involved in the Shelby story in the '60's. What a magical time. Many of those interviewed point out that what happened during those years had never happened before, and would never happen again. How true. Imagine one man with a vision accomplishing what he did in the five years from '62 to '67, in today's world.
