Unsure of this rational as IMO an unneeded process and expense. I've done numerous frames using the aformentioned process....still look good 15+ years later.

Re: 1965 frame paint or power coating
I like powder coating but I also see no reason whatsoever to paint over PC. Eastwood chassis black primer and paint is a good product.
PS. If one was to paint over PC, you would need to scuff sand the PC.- Top

Re: 1965 frame paint or power coating
Ralph,
I think you have to decide if you want your restoration to look like the way Chevrolet built the car or your version of that. Chevrolet never powder coated anything and if you check closely on the high end restored Corvettes, they were done the way Chevrolet built the car in the first place. There is a big difference in finishes.
Check out the cars that are resorted correctly and make your decision .

Re: 1965 frame paint or power coating
I guess if you apply the CDCIF deduction standards the powder coat you could lose 20% for finish. Assuming everything else is good. Keep in mind that the total points for the frame is about the same value as the wiper motor. Even if you had a fabricated tube frame with every thing mounting to it as original the deduct would not be that much. Seems a bit goofy for a piece so big and major to the car but by the points not a big deal.......!- Top

Re: 1965 frame paint or power coating
Ralph, why would you want to powder coat the frame? Are you going to be driving it in a lot of salt and ice? If you're concerned about a salt air environment, there is no difference in corrosion protection between PC and paint. In addition, when PC chips, the repair is to fill the hole with paint. Finally, does it matter to you that PC leaves a much thicker and detectable coating?
As I've said many times before, powder coating gives an extremely durable finish, but it has no place on a classic car and certainly not on one that is not driven very often.

Re: 1965 frame paint or power coating
Ralph,
As Paul said, why would you powdercoat the frame if the car is being restored for use in flight judging? You will be much better off in the long run to restore the car back to the condtion it was when GM built it. If you can find a copy of David Burroughs book,"Corvette Restoration Sate Of The Art" buy it and follow his restoration method. You'll Top Flight without issue.
Good Luck.

The first time I read it (early 90s) I sent David Burroughs a note and he called me to discuss the book to discuss the book and the car. Nice guy, too.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS
