The napaonline.com buyer's guide lists it for use on what looks like all big blocks from '65 into the seventies, so it appears to be an OE replacement, but unfortunately no force/rate data is listed for it.

Someone will have to buy one and have it tested to be sure.

It's a dual spring with a damper sandwiched between the two springs... interesting.

If I replace the first desing valve springs, seals, locks, should I replace other components such as new (GM or aftermarket such as Lunati) pushrods, rocker arms, etc.?
                      Thanks

also if you use the spring with the flat wound damper make sure the valve spring shim you use is hardened as these flat wound damper will cut into any metal that is not hardened. you can use a file to check to make sure the shims are hardened and the ones sold by GM are hardened

no if they show no sighs of wear. also keep the parts together as they come out of the engine so there is no breakin required.

From How-to-Hotrod BB Chev's (1972 issue); they only concern themselves with hi-perf GM items.

There was another 396/427 spring (not shown) #3856860 (w/damper) for Passenger BB's (exc. Sp. H/Per.) starting in '65 and covering all low-perf 396 passenger up to '69, and even the low-perf '69 427 (from my P&A catalog July '69 Rev.).

I'm sure that if there were reliability problems, this spring would have been replaced during that timeframe. I do see that it's gone from my Jan '70 P&A catalogs, though, replaced by the 3859911.

There were some awful slow learners at GM during that time period. If they had inventory in the warehouse, it most likely would have been used up before they replaced it. Plus the communication pipeline between dealers, factory service rep's, engineers, etc is not what it is today

You might also consider looking at http://racingsprings.com/Multimedia/...talog_2012.pdf or on catalog www.racingsprings.com

They offer several springs that could be possibly retro fit to the engine. While they don't offer application information I know the PAC-1212X spring will retrofit into the LT engine group. For further information you can contact Matt Milkovich as I have worked with him in the past on similar retrofit discussions.
