    '72 splash guard pics

Just wondering if anyone has ay pics of the splash guards from a '72 w/ a/c. Mine are a bit deformed and would like to get them back to thier original shape before I reinstall them. Any pics would be a great help, the side views in particular. Thanks!!

Alan, thanks for the effort and pics. Seems my terminology was off. This and the this are what I was speaking of.

        Hi Lynn,
        Sorry about that.
I have some straight on pictures of the shields, and nice close-ups of the fasteners, but none of the shields from the side.
I'll check again this afternoon and if no one else has posted some by then I'll take some pics for you then.
        Regards,
        Alan

Most of us, obviously except Paragon, refer to thise things as heat shields. Whatever their function they fail miserably at it so perhaps what we call them doesn't matter. Right or wrong, you will see them called heat shields in the TIM&JG. I will be very interested in seeing if the thinking is they should be straight or curved.

            Hi Lynn & Terry,
Here are the shields from my 71.
They haven't had the shape 'massaged' at all since they were removed for the first time.
They had a new coat of manganese phosphate about a year ago.
            Hope these help Lynn!
            Regards,
            Alan

Alan, thanks for the pics, they helped a lot. Those are your originals I assume? Since terry asked, I guess there's a debate about it, should they be flat or curved?

                Hi Lynn,
I'm the original owner of my car and that's the 'shape' they were when I took them off during my restoration.
I'm not really sure how typical they may be.
                Regards,
                Alan

                  mine were exactly like Alan's.
                  I don't remember any curvature.

I will look for some pictures and post them later.

Also, FYI - The hareware, the nuts attaching them to the lower part of the firewall should also be gray phosphate just like the shields themselves.

                      Re: '72 splash guard pics

I have seen them as in Alan's photos on my car they were also as Alan's what we could call straight. But I have also seen them with what could call a bow or curved in the area between the mounting points on many cars. The bowed ones that I have viewed do not show any signs of being bowed due to damage or bent by tooling. Have heard of some talk that wind pressure may have caused the bow but at this time I am not sure if this is just 1 of 2 normals 1 bowed and 1 straight.

                        Hi,
If in mounting the shield the 2 nuts are tightened on the studs so that the stud is at the 'top' of the slot first, then either the shield, or the lower mounting bracket riveted to the underbody, needs to be bent in order to fully tighten the lower screw/large washer.
Could the sequence of when the 3 fasteners were tightened have affected whether the shield was bowed or not?
                        Maybe?
                        Regards,
                        Alan

I took these guards off my new 1970 after hearing pinging from small road debris "ping" from impact on the guards. I coated them with the stuff you spray on wheel wells. My first modification of my original owner Corvette.
