    Re: C1 Spindle casting number

    Joe,

Restoring a '59. Any idea if the R+L steering knuckles and spindles are inter-changeable ?

Customer had these powder coated and the numbers are buried, axle spindles are even worse.

I can make out "450 GM" on one of the castings. Other one is possibly "40" at the end.

Assembly manual didn't show anything (at least so far)

I had pics of the passenger side assembly and one knuckle had 2 casting numbers, a 4 digit towards the top.

Any advice is appreciated - you're the parts guru around here !!

      Joe,

The Corvette Steering knuckle part numbers are; left 3733449, right 373450

Would not expect Steering knuckles to be inter changeable since Chevrolet specified a left and right steering knuckle part.

The PART number for the 1958-62 Corvette steering KNUCKLES was GM #3737594. The same steering KNUCKLE was used for both sides. The only forging number I can find is 3693446 but it's possible there were others.

The steering SUPPORTS and steering ARMS were different for each side. The SUPPORTS were GM #3733449, left side, and 3733450, right side and carried the same forging numbers. The steering ARMS were GM #3733451, left, and 3733452, right. I don't know what forging numbers these carried.

          Re: C1 Spindle casting number

I don't care what the forging numbers or part numbers are, the spindles, knuckles, or whatever you choose to call them, are the SAME and are 100% INTERCHANGEABLE between 49-54 pass cars and 53-62 Vettes (they are NOT left and right). BUT, the spindle supports, uprights, again, whatever you choose to call them are LEFT and RIGHT and are NOT interchangeable.
The 49-52 pass car and 53-62 Vette spindle supports are interchangeable. The 53-54 pass car spindle supports are also interchangeable-------------BUUUUUT, the knuckle for the king pin on 53-4 pass car spindle supports is located about 1in higher than it is on 49-52 car or Vette supports. Back "in the day", SOME racers replaced their Vette supports with 53-54 pass car supports which lowered the frontend (thus, lowering the center of gravity, thus, improved cornering-------------------not many people know that today), and along with the 57-59 HD front spings (which are shorter than stock springs, this brings the frontend down even more.
Below is a comparrison between 49-52 car/53-62 Vette spindle supports and 53-54 pass car supports, showing the higher king pin knuckle on the 53-4 pass car supports.

And oh ya, again, I don't care what the casting number or part number is on car/Vette spindle supports, they are totally interchangeable!
And yes, I'm very familiar with these frontends (pass cars/Vettes) because I've been rebuilding and repairing them for almost 50yrs.
