The AC compressor has a date code on the rear plate, near the bottom. Here is a picture of mine when I had it out for rebuild.

Re: 1963 coupe transmission and A/C condenser questions

I have found a 421 bellhousing, 1731 tail housing, 1704 main case, and 1707 side cover. Can you think of anything else I need before I send it to the transmission shop? I also need to paint the bellnousing, any thoughts on best paint and primer? any sealer for the trans case to keep it looking good?

Bellhousing was painted on the engine, so any engine orange paint that matches the engine well should work, don't forget paint on the bolts. No primer was used. I can't think of any "sealer" for the trans case that will not look "phoney" but a light coat of aluminum paint carefully matched to the original aluminum might get by, although given the lack of environmental exposure most of these items get nowdays, I'd lean to leaving the aluminum undisturbed DO NOT glass bead, sandblast, or otherwise disturb the original exterior surface.

do I need a special 63 front transmission bearing? are seals for a 63 trans readily available?

The seals and gaskets (with the exception of the gasket at the front bearing retainer, which is also generally included in most trans gasket sets) are the same. Bearing is smaller in diameter, and different part, but also available

                Joe,

I think there is a small front bearing retainer on ebay right now correct for the 63 transmission. It's the later steel (good) retainer if it's still there..

I agree, the steel one is the one to have. The '63 front bearing for the 4 speed is not listed in the Chevy parts books (at least not the three I checked) but if you have a used one the part number from the bearing mfr should all you to obtain one.

What color is the car ? is it a 300HP or 250 ? is the compressor, compressor bracket and Vents original ? I own a factory air car , normally some parts are hard to come by

GM #604932. However, it was discontinued without supercession in 1984.

This same bearing retainer was also used on some ancient 3 speed transmissions dating back to the 40's and early 50's. It was "brought back" and superceded the original aluminum retainer used for 1963.

As per the Corvette Black Book there were about 929 63 Corvettes that left the factory with 3-speeds. Could your 63 of had a 3-speed?

                          Bill,

You have to go back to the 1963 P&A (October '62 printing), it was GM 3790278. The '64 parts book says "3790278 USE 604932 . . . 8-63".
