I need to remove the ammeter, in my 1960..it is causing a short of some kind in the ignition switch. Can this be serviced while the cluster is in place? Or do i have to pull the steering column and dash pad and windshield just to get to it?

While it is not easy, yes, you can get it out. Disconnect the battery, label the wires, and then remove them. The outboard nut that holds the gauge in place may not be easy to get out, but it can be removed.
You might want to take the seat out to make it a little bit easier to lay under the dash. I would also suggest taking several photos under the dash before you begin.
Good luck.

passanger car manual. attached are two page from the ST-12 on the dash Hope this helps.

Please explain why you think the ammeter is causing a short in the ignition switch....?- Top

There is a nut that is rusty and will not tighten, and it shorts when it is wiggled and causes the ignition not to work. But when you make the adjustments it works fine. I think the little stud inside the gauge is loose and needs to be replaced or repaired.- Top

Agree. The ignition "shorting" is what we wondered about; just semantics. Good luck.- Top
