zinc chromate primer

looking to buy some to paint the bird cage but with no luck at all my local paint stores. they said they stop selling that 15 years ago due to regulations. John Z gave me a link to aircraftspruce.com. they do sell it only in spray cans. am I buying true zinc chromate primer? what is every body else using ?

I was able to buy some at a boating supply store. Also I think I saw it listed with Paragon or one of the other vendors.

Much of the time it's just flat sheen green paint in a can, and not really zinc chromate.

If it were me I'd probably use two stage primer and then cover it with a locally sourced flat sheen green tinted to match the original stuff.

Several marine supply houses actually offer true zinc chromate because outboard engines use it on the aluminum parts. I can't remember the common brand name for the generic, but the Mercury dealers have it under the factory Merc brand.

Moller Zinc Chromate is available at most marine / aviation dealers, West Marine has it in stock. Color is not exact as original but close.

Make sure to wear a mask if spraying zinc chromate primer. This stuff is toxic.

I used Nasons (Dupont second tier product) self etching primer.....available at most paint stores. Closely mimics zinc chromate greenish appearance.

Nason or DuPont each have a self etching primer used for corrosion protection over bare metal surfaces. Both are two part mixes, DuPont is 615s/616s, I'm not sure of the Nason product number. The Nason has a cheaper price tag. To get accurate color you may need to mix a little black tint in.

My spray can is in a Seymour paint can - I'd give you the color name and # but I am miles away from it. Google Seymour and see what shows up.....

I spent hours and $$ trying to find something pre-mixed that matched and I don't think there is anything out there like that. To get an exact match, I believe you prime the metal with your favorite preserving primer and then top coat it with a computer matched paint to your birdcage original paint. Below are some pictures showing the original paint on my 67 birdcage under the sill plate, paint I used inside body mount #3 from Long Island Corvette Supply and then three cans of many I bought compared....some chromate and some phosphate. The far right is Mar Pro bought at a marine store in Florida. Nothing I bought matched the original. If you find an exact match in a spray can, I would appreciate knowing.
