    C2 Speedometer Cable Installation

I planned to re-use my original speedo cable when I reassembled the car but broke it when the body went back on the frame. I removed the end of the old cable from the speedometer and attached the new cable. I fed the transmission-end through the firewall and through the transmission tunnel then jacked up the car and slid underneath. I can barely see the connection point on the side of the transmission and see no way to get my hand in that area without at least removing the front exhaust pipe (which also probably means at least removing the rear pipe and muffler too). Does anyone have any suggestions about how to connect the speedometer cable to the transmission without disasssembling things? I'd like to know how others have gone about making this connection before I start tearing things apart.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Doug, the last one I did on my 64 it was easier to remove the drive gear holder out of the side of the tranny, screw the cable onto it and reinsert with the plastic gear back into the trans. No room for hand etc to put cable onto that gear holder next to the transmission tunnel. Try not to drop the plastic gear into the tranny.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

      Hi Dan,
Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll have to get the manual out. I understand what you are telling me but if I can't get to the holder to screw the cable on to it, I don't see how I could get to the holder to remove and reinstall it. Maybe the manual will shed some light on this.

After an hour of twisting and skinning knuckles, I took the front pipe off. Had the job done in a half hour.

Thanks Tom. That's what I was afraid of. As I recall there is a sleve inside the front exhaust pipe that extends into the manifold. So the front pipe has to drop straight down and therefore the rear exhaust has to be moved toward the rear. Wish I would ahve thought this out before putting the body back on the chassis.

There's enough slop in the system if you loosen the center hanger clamp it wiggles out fairly easily.
