Totally agree, as long as that is the main goal of having a presence on Facebook and such. It is a tool to look to the future, not really to better connect with the current membership.

Oh, and by the way, I'm a marketing manager for a consumer brand in a Fortune 50 company, specifically working on advertising.

I'm not saying don't do Facebook, I'm just saying that we should go in eyes wide open in terms of our expectation of what Facebook withi deliver for NCRS.

      Michael -

I agree - the board's behavior has changed since the icons went up; loads slower, stutters before the page finishes loading, etc.

        Re: Social media

I signed up for Facebook about 6 weeks ago as a way to keep in touch with my daughter (age 41) and other family members.

It's been fun for me. I've met up with a couple of old high school buds, old neighbors, friends, AND a lot of NCRS members from all over the country that I know, etc.

So, this soon to be 65 year old guy likes Facebook, and can see how it could be a good marketing tool for NCRS.

I also use Facebook to keep up with family and friends, a very small set BTW, my kids have almost 1000 friends, that is ridiculous, bit typical of Gen Y. I hate the Facebook ads, I remove them at every login, they keep coming back however, you can never get rid of them completely and thus I may soon just scrap the whole mess due to the clutter. Facebook should not be making money off of me and where I browse on the net, nor my interests, they should be fined for violating my privacy, and have been called for it, but they will continue since the younger gen cares nothing of privacy. We need stronger laws to police junk like Facebook.

Rob, very insightful response. As a father of a 14 and soon to be 16 year old, I can tell you that FB (social media) is a huge part of that generation's daily lives.

You can get rid of most of that junk with your settings. I do not even see the sponsored ads on the RH side of the page unless I look for them.

Wish you would tell me how, I have tried everything on the privacy and nothing gets rid of the ads on the right side of my home page. I have to manually remove one at a time and say hide them, but as I said they come right back next time I login

Linked-in is the business world's facebook, seen it quite a bit, but its the same thing.

Looking for someone?, neither are even as close as good ole phone book (online).

It may be a nice way to keep in touch, but if you couldn't find the time to phone and somehow can't write an email because you did not have time, how it is it chatting on facebook so everyone in the world can see it is different? (other than its posted so all the world can see it).

Just heard on the news in the past few days that Facebook is going to have a IPO and has huge plans for expanding and hiring more workers. I do not use Facebook.

That's the easy way alright. But, I just hate to think they are making money every time they put those ads on someone's page, whether you look at them or click into the link or not. It seems dishonest and fraudulent to be paid for doing nothing, but I guess social media only makes money on advertisers and people stupid enough not to care.

Sorry, guys, I disagree about LinkedIn. When's the last time you read about spam, or phishing, or a virus proliferating through LinkedIn accounts. And you don't see any of the junk going on like you do on Facebook and Myspace. I don't know anyone who "socializes" on LinkedIn. It's used mostly to connect with other businesses or employers.

Facebook and Myspace are bad news. Every week you can read articles about various cyber attacks (see above) originating on these sites and user security is nonexistent. And that's why we don't permit our staff to access them at work, but they are permitted to access LinkedIn.

                              Thanks.

I have three LinkedIn accounts, and I have'nt been on any of them in over a year. I joined at the encouragment of some business associates, who were probably concerned with loosing touch.

I realized that these people (and anyone else) has access to my two public e-mail accounts and four telephone numbers (all with voice mail). If they need me to help them with a business problem they can call or e-mail me, but if they want to know how I'm doing, or where I been, they can either meet with me or see me at a business reception. I have enough communication and LinkedIn (and the others) are duplicative, trite, and unnecessary.
