Properly used, Facebook is one of the best marketing tools out there, better even, because it is free. I have conducted a few marketing campains, tracking web site usage on Google Analytics, and it is amazing how many hits you will get from FB.Dick Whittington- Top

Rob, thanks for the post. I think that having a presence on Facebook is Ok for NCRS. However, an overwhelming percentage of the current NCRS membership won't use it. To convince yourself of that, look at the percentage of users of the TDB vs. the total enrollment. For the future (if NCRS has a future past 2030 or so), Facebook and other social sites will become more important as the members at that time will have grown up with social media, texting and such.
While I agree with Dick that Facebook can be effective in certain instances, I don't think you're going to see a lot of incremental new members by simply having a Facebook page. The average non-NCRS Corvette owner needs to somehow KNOW about NCRS to go look for it. In other words, we don't advertise on Facebook or other media outlets to inform them. Word of mouth is (likely) or biggest advertising right now that is consistent throughout the calendar year.Chris Enstrom

Maybe it's my imagination but it seems the TDB has slowed down quite a bit since the appearance of the facebook and other icons. ?? Pages load much slower now. Maybe it's on my end but all other sites load normally.- Top

Very eloquently put! My only comment is that these social web sites are a fad, and they will either disappear as the user group ages (has kids, etc.) or they will morph into something else as the technology changes. Either way, I think that they are a poor investment.

LinkedIn is not actually a social networking site. It's more of a business network, resume/job hunting site. The kind of stuff that goes on on Facebook and Myspace doesn't occur on LinkedIn, as far as I know.
Incidentally, there is an NCRS users group on LinkedIn that a number of us belong to.

Like me, I expect a lot of old timer NCRS guys actuallly value their privacy, which is why I will never join any "social networking" Web sites although my inbox seems to be inundated with "invitations".
Please don't give out my email address so I can be solicted to join... including LinkedIn. I'm comfortably retired. I'm not looking for a job.
I don't need to know what my buddies are doing 24/7, nor do they need to know what I am doing day and night.
Most of my friends have been around for at least 20 years, and I'm not looking for any new ones, but I make a lot of new acqaintences through NCRS because we have a common passion.
For me, email and good old-fashinoned phone calls are a great way to keep in touch, and nobody else is "listening in".
I agree that this phenomenon is a fad. Certainly many of today's twenty-somethings will regret what is on the Web about them when they are forty-something.
There's already more about me on the Web than I would care for, but none of it is anything for me to be concerned about.

I wonder how many people here has actually tried to form an opinion by giving it a try and came up with some sort of conclusion first hand and how many people are just copying what they have heard other people copying?
Seriously if you believe the media these days we, in the Netherlands are all still wearing clogs and are all running windmills as an occupation...
After using Facebook for a couple of weeks (and I was skeptical as well) I now think it is an outstanding marketing tool, it is the equivalent of advertisement by mouth on the internet. Not because you want to get people to your Facebook (or other SM) page but because it is very strong in pointing people to interesting material on the internet. Without any effort you can point your network to interesting articles, video clips, photo's, etc.
Also it provides you an easy method to share photo's and video's. Things we hear people struggle with almost every week in our IT helpdesk.
In my opinion it provides the NCRS a cheap and extremely effective way to reach out to a badly needed younger audience to ensure our clubs future existence so we can trust them to protect our precious cars for future generations...Rob.
