    Polishing Plexiglas Rear H/T Window

What is the best procedure to remove scuffs, minor scratches, and then polish the window?

I purchased a plastic headlight cover polishing kit because I thought it might be the same process, but want to hear from Vette owners that have done this before.

The types of plastic are different. I believe most current headlight lenses are some sort of polycarbonate. Plexiglass is a different formulation, so I don't know if the headlight lens polishing kits are appropriate.

However, the first thing I'd try would be something like Meguiars Plastic Polish or Arrow Magnolia Plastic Polish. Both of these are used to polish plexiglass windshields in light aircraft and work great.

For something like this (as well as many other restoration situations), always use the least aggressive method first.

Joe , I'll answer this post as well , I used Meguiars PlastX polish I bought at Advance Auto parts . I used it with a buffer and foam pad . If you have any scratches that won't polish out you will have to use 1550-2000 grit sand paper to remove the scratches and then rebuff . Like Joe L said try less agressive first .

Back in the 60's I got lots of practice buffing out scratches on my first 58 when service stations would use their blue paper towels on the back window if I forgot to tell them not to clean the back glass . Does anyone remember the days of full service gas ? A blue towel must be the equivilant of at least 2000 grit . Stan

Thanks to all for the information. I only have one wide scuff mark and minor scratches, but will probably go over the entire window with 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, then buff with plastic polish.

Yep! I worked at a Mobil station in the '60's and the blue paper towels were rough---and were impregnated with soap.

I suppose my 63 top with stress cracks in it from improper storage (stood up on end) is a lost cause.

There is no product that I am aware of that will remove the stress cracks as they penetrate the thickness of plexiglass; not a surface feature that can be removed with buffing/polishing.

Has anyone used--Novus Fine Scratch Remover-- I bought it years ago from a Harley Davidson dealer and it is supposed to work well on motorcycle helmet from shields. I have some scratches I need to take out of my 1967 rear window.

                Thanks

Novus will polish very fine, light scuff marks and scratches, but most of them will still be there. Use a buffer on a slow speed. It will shine the plastic.

Yes Stan. I was a SHELL DEALER, 1966-79, then CHEVRON, and UNION 76.

I used to polish my Corvette rear plexi with a product my airplane friends gave me. Very similar I am sure to Meguires PlastX polish.
