Re: What are those new icons?

I've tried another computer running Vista, still slow, so it's not the Operating System. I'm using Time Warner Roadrunner. I've deleted the cookies and browsing history, run CC Cleaner, it's still there. It's related to the number of replies on a thread, this one is starting to slow down. Like the other replies, I don't have the problem on other sites and it only started after those little icons appeared.

Every bit of information might help for us to work on a solution for this problem...
      Rob,

I fired up IE9, just for you. Even slower than FF8 without Adblock, almost painful. Running AVG anti-virus with Link Scanner.

Same for me. I have IE8 on one machine and IE9 on another. It gets so bad at times, it just stops loading. Similar to 1995 dial up.

It's not quite as bad when I turn off Microsoft Security Essentials, but still very slow loading.

No issues at all on any other sites.

WOW, I tried Google's Chrome and the response times are lighting fast, 1-second on the old "63 Z06" topic that had a bunch of replies and was taking forever in IE. So the culprit must be IE.

Chrome is gaining market share by leaps and bounds. It has a learning curve, but I really like it. I run two machines side by side, one normally has IE open and the other Chrome. No comparison. The bunch in WA is going to have to get their act together if they keep the #1 spot in web browsers. Firefox is losing ground big time also.

Ken, is you CPU heavily used when you encounter this problem, is your hard-disk extremely active when this happens? What internet service provider are you using. Maybe I should hook up using TeamViewer or Skype (share screens) to figure out the experienced behavior? Can I Skype you later today (my account is rmusquetier) to investigate?

Re: What are those new icons?

I've started IE here and watched the CPU usage on my own PC, it starts slightly slower (loading the icons takes app. 1 - 2 seconds) but I do notice the CPU is maxed out at that period so it might be CPU related. My machine here is an old one though dual core 2GHz laptop.

Re: What are those new icons?

I've added a poll to get an insight how serious the performance problem really is. If too many people are bothered I'll take the buttons of the thread pages...

It would really help if I could investigate with Skype using screen sharing with someone experiencing the problem so I could get an insight what the root cause of the problem is...

This week I'll be in all week in Romania for work so it have to wait till next week

                    Rob,
I will be happy to work with you on determining what's causing the slowdown. If you want to use a remote control software like Webex or Teambuilder you can have access to my pc and see first hand what's happeing.

I'm this week in Romania, and I haven't got my laptop with me (just the iPad). Maybe we can do this either in the weekend or next week. Please consider 6 hours time difference with New York City...

Re: What are those new icons?

I'm in Romania now using IE6 and I do experience some delay, varying from 1 - 10 seconds when the SM buttons are loaded. It seems that the buttons are contacting the AddThis.com server which is collecting statistics on the site usage. During this period the page is shown but you can't scroll using IE6 (I'm not sure if this was also the case using Chrome but then the delay times were much shorter (< 2 seconds) at home in the Netherlands so you harldly noticed it).

I'll mail AddThis company to see if they know what is going on and if they can solve the issue and otherwise I'll get Like/Twitter and Share buttons from another provider to avoid the issue...

In the meantime I'll switch off the buttons on the thread pages to avoid additional stress...

                        For those who are interested:
I think the biggest difference in the performance issue between IE and Chrome is due to the fact IE is single threaded and all processing is then stopped as soon as one single action is stopped while chrome is multi threaded resulting in the fact overall loading is then continued. IE is really lacking in keeping pace of current innovation made by other browser vendors (FireFox, Chrome, Safari). Sorry for being too technical...

I found a possible solution I would like to try so I enabled the buttons once more. For those who had problems before let me know if this is still the case...

The delay is still there for me. It took 24 seconds to open this thread, running IE. Once the thread was open, it took 5 seconds to get the second group of replies, and another 5 seconds to open your last posting so I could make this reply.

When ever I go to the NCRS site the computer slows dirmaticaly. I do not know what it and it never was that way before.
