I ending up with Joe Gibbs Driven 10-30w conventional. Not the cheapest, but worth it to me, $9 a quart at local speed shop. Still plenty of oil presure, 40-50 psi at idle. I only have around 400 miles on a rebuilt engine.

...sounds like you have a "high volume", "high presure" oil pump, when all you need for most OE small blocks is a standard volume, standard pressure pump. The only exception is late '63 and later mechanical lifter engines, which have standard volume, high pressure pumps.

Too high oil pressure is always the pump, not the oil viscosity grade.
