This battery we are working on is an antique auto batt.
With a hair dryer, I warmed the shiny top surface and it is real easy to get that layer off.
The smell is like road asphalt.
There is another layer below that - same shiny - but I'm not sure its a good idea to take that one off, its almost like that one is holding the whole thing together.
I also exposed some white hot melt on the inner sides and this is highy questionable if its the same type of construction as the Restorer article.
Michael, I shot you an email - was interested to know the tar details a little better, now its not clear we can even do this the way this one is constructed.
