Joe, if you get the opportunity please ask Bill how he keeps the oxidation off the wheels. Light polishing? Coating of wax, petroleum product, or---?

    Thanks Joe!

Bill told me he had the wheels treated with some process but I can't remember the details.

I will ask next time we meet.

Talked to owner. He added the red/white & blue. He said that was the first time anyone ever asked him.

                  Steve,
Personally I like the oxidized look.

                    Joe,

Halibrands need to be refinished in a process called "pickeling".

Go to an old chrome shop, they probably have all the information you need on how to refinish a magnesium wheel.

if you can't find information in Denver there used to be a chrome shop called Classic Chrome, I believe the owners name was Dave Willbanks or something like that, he knew all about refinishing those wheels.

                      Re: Special 57

To accurately determine how to "refinish" the original type kidney bean wheels I believe we need to know what was the original finish?

Most hot rod wheels were polished but racing wheels (kidney bean, spokes, slotted , etc) appear to be painted or "as cast".

I Googled "refinishing magnesium wheels" and there is lots of information to consider.

It seems that if they are not constantly maintained and protected they can pit badly.

There is an interesting aerosol penetrent material called Gibbs Brand which seems to be excellent for protecting mag wheels and parts.

Mine came originally with a Dow 7 like coating, giving a very slight goldish/greenish cast over the Mg. Bruce, the site I believe you are referring to is a very good one.
