I found these '71 pictures online. The car was a 2010 Top Flight, so I was planning to emulate its front suspension finishes in detail. Are the orange, green, and blue assembly paint marks accurate in these pictures? Please let me know if you see anything else out of place. Thanks!

Re: Front Suspension Assembly Marks- Orange, Green, and Blue
Not every car was marked and those that were, were not all the same. I'm restoring a very original 65 that still has all the marks and I'm replicating them. It differs from what others have and what Quanta's sheets state but I know it's original so that's the way I'm doing it.
If you don't have the original marks, why copy what is probably wrong for your car?- Top

Keep looking Jerod. IMO those marks are not typical factory production.Terry- Top

I would suggest, if at all possible, you try to look at original unrestored cars as examples. I know these can be hard to find -- especially this time of year. As Jim Durham said, not every car had the same marks, but it is far better to emulate the markings on an original car than a restored car -- especially one where you do not know if the restorer recreated what he found, used another car as an example, or used his imagination.Terry- Top

Re: Front Suspension Assembly Marks- Orange, Green, and Blue
I tried to look through Kevin Goodman's pictures, my other reference car, but time has taken its toll on the chassis finishes. The details such as the assembly marks do not appear well in the pictures...or they are just gone due to surface rust. I'll keep my eyes peeled for an original '71- I have never seen one. You can bet if I ever do, I'm offering to buy the owner dinner for a chance to look at it on a lift. Next spring, I'll get the chance to be a trainee judge...that will really help. In the mean time, I'll be scouring the internet and asking Terry for help. Thanks, Terry.- Top

Jerod, I can tell there is a poster here on the TDB that a has a 1971 with about 7k, send Dave Strickland PM and he may have some pic.s not sure but doesn't hurt to ask.
When I restored my 72 the front suspension was untouched and the only marks I had left were the inner tie rods had yellow paint still left which I left alone. I Don't think all cars were alike.Last edited by Edward J.; November 6, 2011, 07:46 AM.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Front Suspension Assembly Marks- Orange, Green, and Blue
I've never seen an original 70-72 with this much color underneath. It looks like someone borrowed a page from the midyears when restoring this one.
And, just because it received a Top Flight doesn't mean that all of the car is correct. Up to 6% of the car could be not typical and it would still receive the award.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

I would like to see what a Quanta inspection sheets lists. If anyone can scan and post, it would be appreciated.Tom Russo

The '67-'69 Camaro guys go nuts with this stuff, including paint-stick option coding on the firewall that was never on the original cars; I call it "restoration graffiti".- Top
