    A/C compressor 69

I am looking for a compressor for my Nov 69 build. How do I go about getting a correct one for the car. I have seen several old compressor that would need to be rebuilt. Can they be rebuilt to function correctly? How do you determine the production date for one? I want to continue to run R 12 when car is completed not convert over to R 134.

Anthony, I believe that the A-6 compressors where were much alike and that there was a casting date on the rear of the compressor ( where the manifold and hose bolts up). There is also a label on compressor that had a part no. and the date it was manufactured. The problem with the repro label is the comes blank and you need a typewriter with the correct sized font.

The truly unique compressors were on the 63-65 cars where the case was swedged at the front rather than welded. Otherwise, parts is parts as they say.

So the casting date is not visible with the muffler and hoses hooked up? So besides correct looking foil labels for a 69 and typical compressor for a 69 is all I would need to have to pass judging?

You would have to look at one to see if the casting date is visible installed in a car.

            Anthony,
The date is on the back plate and dated like most of our parts here is a pic of one.

            I have a A 6 9 , Jan 6th 1969.

I will look at my compressors tomorrow and see what I come up with. Can these be rebuilt reliably?

Thanks, Dom. I looked at the back of compressor in my '70 and all I saw was some partially blocked out numbers and below that was L 26.

                        Scott,
If it has the thermal switch (1 prong) on the back plate it could be a 1976.

It is supposedly original to the 1970 so perhaps a number is covered up by the rectangle compressor manifold.

My '70 compressor is also a 6555302 but it has a casting date (?) of G-3 just under the manifold, then the part number, and below that is L 26. Another '70 owner has one that is A-3, Part #, and L-21. I have no clue what A-3 and G-3 means.
