Re: Strong Smell of Gas
Project complete. Some observations: the old cork gasket just crumbled when removed and was squashed very flat. The O-Rings on the small screws were also very flat and some just broke right off on removal. Everything was showing its' age (48), that's for sure.
Upon completion of installation, I went to clean up the body area and discovered there was a gas film on the body that could not be cut with ordinary detail spray. I had to use "Bug and Tar Remover" to cut it. Tells me where my gas smell was coming when on the road with the top down. Apparently, gas was leaking out around the filler neck just enough to spray a light film back on the body. Now, we'll see if the work was worth it. It certainly can't be any worse.
I used some duct tape to cover over the filler neck while working the boot off, then some more under the tank flange, i.e. some on the inside and the rest outside, while I cleaned/scraped the tank flange. Also, I had to use the anvil and hammer to flatten out the flange which was warped between each screw hole as expected. Not perfect, but better than ir was. I just hope the sealer I used is good enough to fill in the low spots.
