    70 antenna

Just bought a lift so I can double deck my vettes. Drove the shark under the lift, and the antenna hit the lift. Tried to disconnect the mast and couldn't do it.
How do we disconnect the antenna mast from the base on a shark?
    Thanks.

    Mike,
On my 69 (70 should be the same) the factory antenna mast is held on by a bezel or nut at the bottom of the mast . It has 2 flats on it that take, I think a 5/8 open end wrench. Unscrew the bezel and the mast should pull off.

Thought so. I did that, and slid the chrome bezel up and off of the mast. I couldn't separate anything else. The long tapered stainless piece at the bottom of the mast seems like it should turn. I wrapped a piece of rubber around it, and used a pair of pliers. No luck.
I ended up loosening up the big chrome retainer nut that sits on the quarterpanel, and letting the antenna fall down onto the muffler so I could pull the Shark under the lift.
Can't believe this is so difficult.

        Mike,
Your mast must be rusted to the anrenna base. It just pulls off. In the picture I attached you can see how deep the mast goes into the base. Also the mast has teeth that mate up to teeth on the base. Some penetrating oil and patience will hopefully free it up

Mike your mast should come out of the base as posted above. I have a 70 and a 68 and lifts. I leave my antennas off the cars. Local radio reception is good without the antennas.

Now I know how to how to go about it. I'll get after it tonight.
That was really frustrating. Gotta love NCRS!
            Thanks Larry and Jim!

Mike, I had the same problem on my '77. A little penetrating oil and waiting a day worked.

              'Done anything with the '57?

                Thanks Steve.
Been spending most of my time on the shark, but still accumulating 57 original parts. Just got a tach from California that is reallly nice, and a set of 9 fins. Got to be patient or I'll have to pay way too much for stuff.
Just missed a set of 997's for $1,500! Believe it or not, a friend of ours sold them and didn't know we were looking for a set.

Had the same problem with my 1973. It got a Duntov award and I never was able to get the antenna off. Good thing is, you don't have to worry about anyone steeling it.
