'58 270 Duntov oil pan: steel or aluminum?

Just did my first oil/filter change on my '58. I see a tiny leak forming on the drain plug. I may have been too conservative about tightening it.

Anyway, my question: Is the oil pan on this engine steel or aluminum? If it's aluminum, I'll be extra careful about over-tightening. The rubber seal is fine.

By the way, the drain plug is on the driver's side of the pan, somewhere near the middle. Is that a clue about steel or aluminum?

    Thanks, guys.

Not exactly sure about a '58, but my '60 270 horse has a steel "trap-door" pan. I'm not the expert, but I don't think any C-1 had an aluminium pan. Hopefully someone more knowledgable about the 58 will chime in .

      Pan is steel if stock.

Don't think you will find an aluminum pan on ANY REAL Corvette. That was the time period prior to 1967. Yeah, Yeah!

Thanks, guys. I think a magnet might also confirm steel over aluminum. Don't know why I didn't think of that sooner. Duh.

            David,

Recommend you do a "search" of the forum for oil pans. Lots of info and photos/drawings previously posted on C1 oil pans.

BTW, C1 V/8 oil pans are steel. And all the drain plugs are located in the middle rear of the flat portion of the oil pan, not on the side.
