    Intake Guard/Shield

The aluminum intake manifold for 350/365 HP engines has a guard shield on the underside - any part # for the rivits that hold the guard/shield in place? Thanks.

    Loren,
Those are called "drive Screws" and they can be obtained in small amounts from Big Flats Rivit Co. Big Flats, NY. I have delt with them in the past, good people. Check their web site, I think they have an on line catalog. Back to the garage! willy

i would drill and tap for a machine screw and use red locktite. once you take out those rivets i would worry the new ones in the used holes could come out and fall into the engine

        Loren -

They're GM #10229247 "Pin-Eng Air Ht S", 10 to a bag; the splines are VERY sharp, and I doubt they'd ever loosen up when properly installed.

Thank you all, gentlemen. I've been around long enough to appreciate the "collective" Corvette brain trust at work.....and providing assistance. Those who are just now coming on board have yet to experience the rewards on tap.....I only regret the change in emphasis from "the car" to
          "the $$$$$".

I agree; these will work well. However, I'm kind of with clem on this one. While it might be overkill, I like drilling and tapping for machine screws installed with Loctite.

i always wondered if that shield really did any good because if you take one off it is full if burnt oil. i would think the oil would be better off just hitting the manifold and falling back down. JMHO

come to think of it the aluminum intake on BBC had no shield riveted on.

Perhaps it is designed to contain the exhaust crossover heat as well as shield the runners from hot engine oil splash - two fold. You see them even on cast iron manifolds so it's not just an aluminum thing.

the shield did not cover all the runners and when they did use a shield to to prevent the oil from getting to the intake runners it covered the whole length of the manifold

It's there to prevent oil "coking" on the bottom of the hot crossover passage runner and then having fragments of the "coke" fall back into the oil system. Some intakes didn't use them - don't know why.

maybe the new oils don't coke so they don't need the shield

This thread reminded me of a problem I was having with the road race car. It's a 64 FI car and it was hanging up #5 exhaust valve. Clem suggested I fill in the heat crossover passages with refractory cement to prevent hot exhaust gasses from contacting the stem guide area. I filled in the passage and raced both Monterey race weekends.....No more sticking exhaust valve. This area get HOT! Clem and Zora knew something. Jerry
