How best to display at NCRS meet?

It's been many years, a lot of time and money, but I'm finally finished (at least for now) with my full body-off restoration of my '75 convertible. Now it's time to get it judged, but I've never done this before!

What is the best way to display a C3 at an NCRS meet? Any and all advice or tips are welcomed; what to do and not to do. I'm entered in the Texas Regional the end of October and I could use all the advice I can get.

I also want to thank so many of you for your great advice over the years on my project, especially Joe Lucia, Alger Rutz, Patrick Hultz, Terry McManmon, Lyle Chamberlain, John Hinkley, Raymond Wells, Peter Lindahl, Tom Russo, John Waluk and so many, many more.

    Tory -

Do you have the 8th Edition "Corvette Judging Reference Manual"? It describes the judging process in detail, including an "Owner's Advisory" section that describes what to expect and how to prepare. It's available from our NCRS on-line store at the "NCRS Store" icon in the blue line at the top of the page.

Go through the Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide page by page and self-judge your car. Make sure everything works, as points lost on Operations can really add up. An NCRS decal, battery cut-off and fire extinguisher will get you 10 easy points. Don't worry about the small details at this stage, they're not worth a lot of points. Focus on the big items, like tires being correct brand and size, or battery being AC Delco.
Don't stress too much, have fun and good luck!

Re: How best to display at NCRS meet?

Thanks John. I ordered the book last night. I'm sure I'll be a lot smarter soon.

William: Thanks. Great details. Already have the NCRS decal and cutoff. I'll take an extinguisher from another car. I'll change my battery to Delco and as for tires, I have the original Firestone Steel Radial 500s. Should be good there. too.

If you think of any other great tips, let me know.

Tory..as a Judge and Owner I like to have the car ready for judging. I mean having all personal items out of the car..floor mats, garage door opener and guns!

Spare tire should be out and down behind car, Jack and Owner's Packet out of the glove box. Under hood, Air Cleaner off and Ignition Shielding over Distributor only off.

I like to provide my own matching fender covers.

If you do all this..the judges would be SHOCKED that it is your first time!

          Good luck with the car.

I am attending the TX Regional also so I look forward to meeting you. (I usually hang out around the Flight C3 cars anyway after checking out the other Corvettes).

The best way to spend your free time at this point is on the Operations section - there are 750 points there, and almost every item is pass/fail, 25 points at a crack (it takes a LOT of onesy-twosie deductions in other areas to equal just ONE Operations deduction). Learn how to start the car correctly from cold, and make sure your fast-idle system is engaging and releasing properly.

You can obtain sample judging sheets online so you, and perhaps a friend or two, can do a practice judging.

As an interior judge, I second what Peter said about getting all the personal stuff out of the car.

I found it very helpful when I was a newbie to go through chapter judging before a regional, so many things you will miss on your own without any judging experience.

                  Ya'll are a great help.

As for the owner's packet Peter mentioned, since I'm the original owner and have all the original documents in clear sleeves in a 3-ring binder, should everything be taken out and packed into the clear owners envelope, or would the judges like to just leaf through the binder to see everything better?

I've downloaded the judging sheets and will concentrate on Ops. Thanks.

As for Micheal's sound advice of showing at Chapter before Regionals, well I wasn't finished before the chapter meet, so I figured I'd just dive into the deep end of the pool!

                    Tory-
I would leave all your documents in the binder. Have the binder ready to show the judges. I have had my car judged three times. Only once did a judge ask me to take an item out of the plastic.
                    Good luck at the regional;

Re: How best to display at NCRS meet?

                      Tory,

When you get the car to the Regional, and have done all the prep work the others have suggested (pulling down the spare tire, taking off the ignition shielding, etc), BRING A PEN AND PAPER. When the judges go over the sheets with you, TAKE NOTES.

If you are not planning on campaigning the car any further, then you wouldn't need to worry about taking notes. But if you, like me, want to continue to improve the car and make it as good as it can be, you'll need to take notes.

Also, have an open mind. The judging that you'll receive at the Regional Level will be great. But no one is perfect. Before you make any drastic changes to the car, ask a lot of questions. Sometimes () judges aren't right about a particular detail. However, having said that, know this. I have had my car judged four times for Flight (twice at the Chapter level and twice at the Regional level). All four times, the comments I received and deducts I received were within a fairly tight range of one another.

Oh, and have fun. That's what this is all about.

                        Chris,

Is there a way to get copies of the judging sheets too? That would go a long ways in coordinating with my notes.

you will receive your judging sheets in the mail a couple weeks after the meet. NCRS does not keep them.
I would add regarding notes. The judges should note any deviations on the sheets, especially ones that cost points, but sometimes they write like doctors,
or shorthand in ways that will have you scratching your head later as you try to recall what they dinged you on.

                            Tory,

If I had to chose between the chapter meet at the speedway and the regional at Frisco - I'd go with Frisco - you'll do fine - just relax

Not knocking the chapter meet, but you'll have a better set of sheets to build off of for the future from Frisco.
