    1966 Alternator Pulleys

Could someone please tell me what the visual differences are between the 3829387 and the 3829193 alternator pulleys used in 1966. Not sure which one I have on my L72. No PS, No AC.

    Thanks

Although both are the same 3-5/8" OD, the 3829193 is a thicker pulley. It has, effectively, a "spacer" built in which occupies the space of one pulley groove. So, it results in the belt being spaced out one groove's width.

The 3829387 is a thinner pulley. It has a much thinner "spacer" on the inside end.

The thread listed below might help. I have a detailed drawing of the 3829193 pulley if you need a photo of it.

Thanks for the info Joe, and Dave.!! Appreciate you taking the time to reply.... and thanks for the link to the earlier thread. Never knew that there was so much discussion on these crazy pulleys.

Dave, could I take you up on your offer of a copy of the 3829193 pulley. Any chance you have a copy of the 3829387 also.

        Thanks

        Bob

          Bob,

Here are my drawings that I drew back in the early 1990's.

            Bob,

I got this drawing from the NCRS Forum but I do not know the thread name.

              Re: 1966 Alternator Pulleys

David, thank you very much!! Thanks for doing all this for me. Really appreciate it. It looks like I have a 3829387 on the car, which I believe is correct based on a L72 w/o PS, or AC (obviously). The current JG says I need a 3829193. I doesn't mention PS, which I think it should. That's what got me started. I think the usage table in the JG will need to be expanded upon, and corrected.

              Thanks again for the pictures.

                Bob,

The 3829387 pulley that I owned back in the early 1980's that I removed from an alternator dated sometime in February 1966 was stamped "3829387-AI" on the front surface.

The 3829387 alternator pulley on my November 65 built 66 does not have a part number stamped on it.

If I remember correctly, there is a note on the GM print that mentions that the part number stamp was added at some time in late 1965?

I'm not sure if any 396 cars with the 3829387 pulley originally had the part number stamped.

                    Mike,

How close is your car to a Sept 23,1965 assembly date? That's when my #1478 was built.

                      Bob,

My 66 is about two months later. Late November, 65.

I just noticed that my previous post stated that my car was built in Sept 65. That should have been November 65, not September. I corrected it. Sorry.
