    Chuck:

    This statement is not correct.

The tank sticker handwritten numbers can be up to "three" numbers, and they can be off from the corresponding VIN numbers by anywhere from 0 to 5 (or 500 and 505). However, the typical difference for most cars is 1 or 2 (501 or 502).

This difference appears somewhat random to me, but was obviously related to what was happening (or not happening) on the assembly line at St Louis.

Al Grenning and others have these differences documented and also when they occurred throughout the years. This information helps them to validate the tank stickers.

That crayon number tied your body to the build sheet which tied the body to the dealer and order number because the VIN# had not yet been assigned to the car. This is the so called "job number" that is periodically discussed.
Are you 100% sure of this?

Unless I'm looking at the wrong thing I don't think the job # on the body and the Ident # always match up. I did a little checking and have found several that don't. And using your theory, the last 3 numbers of the Ident number will never be higher than 500 and I have found a couple that are higher.
But I could be wrong or miss understanding

                Stephen:
I have a 1967 Canada car with the original tank sticker that specifies V48 extra antifreeze, the Canada warrantee book, and the Canada import agent. I removed it from the car myself and it agrees with the GM documentation that GM Canada supplies.

However, I am having a hard time seeing how it fits with your interpretation of the job number. The vin is 14319, and the penciled number on the tank sheet is 317. The job number crayoned on the doors and rear bulkhead is 107. The Indent. No. on the tank sticker is 817553 which bears no obvious relationship to the 107 job number. The order number is 17387. The date received is 03-08-67; the expected date of production is 03-31-67, and the trim tag date date and shipping date are both April 27.

It is interesting that the car was built ahead of schedule. I have a page of documention for all the Corvettes imported into Canada in March 1967, and all the other cars have order numbers much earlier than mine (16472 to 16825).

                  Steve -

The ident number has no relationship to the Body Shop Job Number. The unique ident number was assigned by the plant when the dealer order was accepted, and, much later, the unit was scheduled for production based on a number of different priorities and variables, and was assigned a position with the other 499 units in that released schedule based on other variables. That position within the schedule determined its Body Shop Job Number.
