Here is a 1969 Flint with the same 4.
That being said - I don't like that stamp one bit...

No disrespect but don't know it would be fair to judge Flint engine stampings as compared to engines coming from Tonawonda. They each had their own nuances.

The characters used at Flint and Tonawanda came from the same companies. Used to know the names but NCRS disease (never can remember squat) has taken over my mind. Geo. T. Schmidt Co was one of them (still in business)

The conditions that the pad was photographed in doesn't do the stamping justice. Glare and the obvious mistake of cleaning/polishing the surface make it suspect.
I don't see the resident expert commenting on this pad.

Both sets of numbers are crooked, as in up down, and then in addition the TO set the letters are rotated, one clockwise, the next one counter clockwise.

Yes, and a rag will do it.

I was always under the impression the stamp pad area was a continuous marking of the broach area of the head.
It was not smooth like this block. All the blocks I've seen have little marks from the machine. As the broach machine wears out the marking appear lighter.
I'm am not an expert either, but this my understanding of this area.

Good post JR. I don't think anyone can make an accurate call either way from the photos. I have an opinion, but not sure enough to comment.

If it is an early 66 (Oct, Nov ) block it could be a factory grind out and re-stamp. A # of passenger car 2 bolt 427 blocks were torn down and re- configured for corvetts . They were filed out and re stamped .

At the very LEAST, the stamp pad surface is over-restored.

I do not think the factory restamped 427 blocks with 2 bolt mains. The 427 corvette blocks are listed in the judging guide. This is the bible on that with all the reasearch done over the last 20+ years.

Well I tried to stay out of this but it's just to much fun to miss. In my very humble opinion I would not discount this as a restamp too quickly. If you zoom in on the right side of the pad edge the broach actually looks good. The one digit that is high may simply be out of position in the stamping fixture. The relative positions of the two numbers are correct with the vin being more outbound allowing room for the stamping fixture with the head installed. It would be odd to do this good of a job with a restamp and not get the broaching right all the way across so that could make a case for someone cleaning it up with sand paper not realizing what they were doing. Or not.
