    Matt,

Stamping doesn't show to have much age to it. Pad appears too slick w/o much grain. Fonts do not appear characteristic. Restamp?.....believe it might be.

Looks like the assembly stamp is up under the head. I believe the heads were on when stamped. Thus no way could the stamp be that far up and be an original stamp. My 2 cents.

Tonawanda stamped the machine code before the head was installed

Just to clarify, assembly dates for Flint engines were stamped after the heads were on and for Tonawanda before installation?

So is everyone in agreement that it is a poor restamp? Does anyone think it could possibly be a factory production stamp. Is it me or does the I in the suffix code look like a number 1 turned upside down?? Also wouldnt the actual VIN# be gang stamped and thus be straight????

I went through a few dozen photos I have of date stampings and none showed a 4 like that one. The pad surface is way too shiny compared to what I have seen before.

This may be the case however broach, build date and VIN doesn't look to have all the characteristics of original machining and stamping.

Matt.....please keep in mind we're taking a "best guess" approach regarding the engines stamping.

First off it is a photo and they can be misleading. Secondly someone did the pad no favors when they cleaned? it so that it looks as it has been somewhat polished.

I agree, I have never seen a 4 like that either.

What is the recommended way to clean the paint off a painted stamp pad safely? Mine is currently painted and I was planning to use paint remover and nothing that might risk scratching the iron surface. Would this be reasonable? Thanks.
