1960 283 Camshaft

Would a new camshaft have to be grooved/slotted for oiling? The engine is a 1960 283/230. It presently has a solid lifter cam and would like to change it out to something closer to correct. I am looking at a Lunati 20109 that they recommend. Also any other recommendations would be appreciated. This is part of a winter project.

1960 small blocks do not require the rear journal groove.

You can obtain an excellent replacement cam under GM #14060651.

Thanks for the information, that is what I thought but it came up. Will look into the GM replacement. Closer to original would be preferred.

I don't think you'll be able to discern the difference between the original camshaft and 14060651 in terms of idle quality and general performance. It should be virtually identical.

Also, you might check with GM dealers like the old Sallee Chevrolet in Oregon (now a different name which I've forgotten) and Scoggins-Dickey in Texas. These dealers remove these cams from GM crate engines and build up the engines with other cams and parts to higher performance levels. The removed brand new cams are sometimes sold at very low prices.

$49.95 with lifters at Pace Performance removed from new engine. My debit card is on fire.

The '097' cam was not used in a 283/230hp as is Philip's.

Thanks all, I purchased the cam at Pace Performance, it is a GM dealership used to be Pontiac. I think the cam that I have in the car is a GM solid lifter from the past. Can it be identified when removed? The cam works fine but the type of use that the car gets now I think the new cam will be more user friendly

The old cam should have some numbers on it, if it's GM. Post those numbers here.

It definitely will. The cam you purchased which is the current iteration of the one generally known as the "300 HP cam". This cam is one of the best street cams EVER used in a Corvette. Period.

By the way, its name in the vernacular is derived from its use in 327 and 350 cid engines. It will not produce 300 horsepower in your application.

Phil,

When you remove the old solid lifter camshaft be very careful to keep the lifters in the exact order as they came out of the block.

Don't get in a hurry because someone may be able to use the old camshaft and lifters if all is in good condition but it's very important to put the lifters back to the same lobe they were running with.

I have heard good things about the old 327/300hp cam, that should be a good match for my engine.
Thanks for the tip on the lifters I will be sure to keep them in the correct order not sure if it is worth anything but will see when it is replaced this winter.
