The only place you can probably find an original air cleaner element at a reasonable price is at a swap meet but it might take some time. I found one for $5 several years ago in a box dated 1974 as shown in the link below (March 26, 2011 @ 02:07 AM).

My personal opinion has been, is now, and will be in the future that paying these kind of prices for an air filter element just to achieve a few nuances of detail is NUTS.

I didn't think $5 for my NOS air filter element in the box dated 1974 was bad at all. I guess you just need dig through all the boxes at swap meets and get lucky. If you want someone else to do the dirty work you have to pay the price.

Dave, that is what I do at most local swap meets. Dig through boxes. T-3 headlights through 1972 at $5 each or less, five port washer pump and motor for $20, original Holley open air cleaner base and lid $20, nearly new Patent Pending R distributor cap $1, oil/gasoline/radiator caps $2-$5, $20 each for a 1970 and 1971 Corvette fuel cap, nice pair of original black Comfortweave visors for $10, on and on.
