In Europe some classic car insurance companies only allow you to drive 3 or 5K km max per year and use the odometer as guidance

Agreed. Interesting how such a simple, innocent question brings out such strong opinions and arguments.

The question was innocent without doubt, but far from simple. We all hate fraud and deception, changing the recording on an odometer sort of heads in that direction. Perhaps the OP had not thought of that aspect.

Well, I have bought many classic cars over the years where the odometer was left alone (correct or not), and which have been reset to zero after complete restoration. I have a '56 T-bird now that was reset, this is just no big deal in my opinion, you know and can find these things out. They are all exempt anyway, and the miles can usually never be completely verified anyway, so I just don't see any fraud or deception here.

              Michael,

I'm not going to argue with you or anybody else and I certainly don't want Paul to sic anyone on me.

Let's say the OP decides to sell his car in five years. The purchaser asks about the mileage which shows maybe only 5-10K miles at that time and is told that it was 'reset to zero' for reason blah blah blah.

I doubt 100% of buyers will see that as a 'positive' thing.

I was given the choice upon completion of my own frame off years and years ago and opted to leave it alone. Resetting an odo to zero because of a frame off is the same thing as a calling a '1967' a '2011' because that's the year the refurb was done.

              I'm done.

I agree. Nobody can prove that ANY odometer reading is correct or not.
