After I took a second look today, when my eyes were fresh, I believe that I made an error as to the part number 3881440 being the auto choke rod. That number is incorrect.

While the thermostat is the same for base 300HP and SPHP350, the choke rod is not. The correct number for the 300HP motor is #3881866. This number was available until 1972 /73 or a bit beyond: cannot determine history after that, most likely discontinued. The correct number for 350HP (L79) is #3881888 which was replaced by #3917616 in 7 /68. This number appears to have been good for several more years.

The GM #3881866 was discontinued without supercession in September, 1977. The GM #3917616 was discontinued without supercession in March, 1997.

      Scott,

I do not know the correlation between the 4-digit number on the choke coil and the GM part number. I assume the 4-digit number is the vendor part number. I have a NOS choke assembly, GM # 3973497 (in service since March 1970) for my 1970 Camaro SS350 long term project and it is stamped "6650" on the coil part. The 1970 Camaro AIM part number number is 3973475 for the L48 option.

I have an original choke coil from my 1966 Corvette 300 HP cast iron intake manifold but finding it may be difficult.

        Scott,

Yes, it appears that your choke stamped "7149" on the coil is GM # 3887148. Refer to the link below.
