    Re: C1 radio blank plate

    Which number, 3707868 or 3706916?

Was there really a 3714216 stamped straight line or just the drawing? I've seen some but thought they were repros.

      - 3706916 Cover Assy Instrument Panel Radio Opening is die cast
      - 3714216 is the blue print drawing number for the straight line stamped radio block off plate. Without a blueprint by Chevrolet/GM engineering there wouldn't be any part produced.

Don't have a clue how the P&A 30 parts books "over the counter parts" how or why were assigned different part numbers. Many parts that have the different P&A part #'s show the "cast number", but not all do.

Maybe John Hinckley can shed some light on this subject.

Part numbers were signed out to the groups in batches. Ken Kayser in some of his articles has printed a list of those numbers. No one so far has found a "part number index" for 1956-7.

Have never seen a part number on any straight line block off plates

        Gary -

It wasn't unusual for the Parts guys to assign a different part number to a service part when it included the fasteners or other hardware, which were NOT included with the production-line part. That's why you frequently see completely different part numbers for the same part in the P&A books; shock absorbers are a good example - in Service, they come with the attaching nuts and washers, so the "assembly" or "unit" gets a different part number than the same part used in production.

          Re: C1 radio blank plate

OK, just to add some mud to the discussion

The 56 passenger car AIM has the following information

          Radio Hole Cover
          3714216 1500-2100
          3722647 2400

          1500 is the 150 model 56 Chevy
          2100 is the 210 model 56 Chevy
2400 is the BelAir model 56 Chevy

The BelAir radio cover plate is stainless steel and matches the BelAir dash trim. The pictures throughout the AIM that show the cover show the star burst cover. That is obviously NOT definitive, just another data point.

John, thanks. Didn't think about a part number including fasteners, thus the part number would differ from the blueprint number. Duh!

Ed, good find. Never thought of checking the passenger car AIM.

OK, a couple of pictures. THis is what I believe to be true for passenger cars...

The first picture is a 56 Belair radio delete cover plate (3722647)
The second picture is a 56 150 210 radio delete cover plate (3714216)

Hi , my true radio delete original 57 in the 2300's serial has its original star burst plate , just to add to the fire & retaining nuts are pal nuts, go figure.
